You can pick them and eat them at any time. The optimal time to pick them is just before the veil breaks away for the stem. If you have aborts you can eat those as well, just make sure you get them before they start to rot.

before the viel breaks is a good time, short and fat, fat-asses? are your cakes getting waterlogged (ie. sitting directly on the perlite?)

the older the shrooms, the less potent. pick 'em small, like phrozendata said. i heard that the abhorts are potent too.

How can you tell when the veil is "about" to break, would it be better to just guess and pick early, when does the psilocybin in the mushroom stop being produced and so further growth is just of the shroom and not psilocybin content?

the shrooms that fall off early are said to be extremely potent (small size, full amount of drug). Pick the shroom any time. Everybody else has good advise, too.

just think about it this way> how old of a girl would you want to have sex it? when they're 4 years old or when they're 40 years old? i prefer mines between the ages of 16-25 because they're just ripe and hot.. mmm...

Psilocybin continues to be produced until the veil breaks and it sporulates.. to get the maximum amount of psilocybin/psilocin, pick just as the veil is breaking.

Haha, I like reffermidgets explanation.
Anyway, will there be any difference if I dry AS it is breaking (I am not sure if I will notice) or as soon as it breaks? I do not think it will matter that much but I'm not sure.

it won't matter, the only thing is, that after the veil breaks, psilocybin production slows, but it doesn't make much of a difference.

vivid is right the mushroom do not produce a lot more psilocyben once they get big. They just suck more water out of your cakes. That is why you pick them before they get to big you want to save as much water as you can in the cakes so you can grow more mushrooms.

that is another reason to grow on casings, the casing layer(s) provide plenty of moisture for continued flushes.. especially if you incorporate some perlite in the recipe :smile:. I let my mushrooms grow up until they break the veil.. theres nothing wrong with that (just dont let too many spores settle on your casing, because taht causes a chemical reaction that prevents further flushes)..ohh.. and cakes blow.

Well, I tried the small cap theory last year and didn't really have any success with effect until the caps on my pf's got about dime-sized. Some of them I got just before the cap broke and some right after. The caps were still conical in shape...very young, but not babies.

Experimentation is the key to finding what's gonna work best for you.

You can tell when the veil is ruptureing when the skin under them starts to break away. So, basicly, when you can start to see the gills.

to be honest hippie, i don't much care about your oppinion. If your trying to say that cakes are better than cased spawn of any kind, your terribly mistaken. I find casing to be easier, and much more rewarding than those annoying pf cakes.

i've read your posting history, you've only been growing a few months yet you try to come off as an expert, which you obviously cannot be.
if you want to go full-blown confrontational,
i'd be happy to post some of your past errors like how i showed you to be wrong in the thread on cold shocking.
you did not do wll with cakes ?
then you really are slow, anyone can grow them.
and how many casings have you even done now ? 2-3 ?
have you ever even tried birdseed cakes or are you just assuming all cakes to be pf style ?
in short, shut up until you have more experience or i'm just going to expose you before this whole group for the fraud you are.

now excuse me here, I have been cultivating for around 6 months now, maybe a little shy of that. I don't try to come off as an expert, but when i see something that is WRONG, then i correct it ok shithead? And hippie, what 'bad advice' are you talking about?...

i think i'll have to take vivid's side on this one. i've never done birdseed, so this may not hold true for it. if so, then i apologize. i've cased, and done cakes. my opinion? cakes can suck my sweaty nuts. i think casings produce better AND easier than cakes. i've had troubles getting some shrooms to fruit off cakes, but casings will get them to pop right up. i may mix my substrate too dry, but even with that being the case, cakes are notorious for drying out way before the nutrients are used up. this may be different with birdseed, i don't know, maybe it holds water better, in which case cakes may produce just as much as casing(i find this hard to beleive, though).

vivid hasn't been around long, but i respect his opinion and how much he helps people. i've yet to see him give out wrong advice. hippie, i try to be unbiassed, and i honestly appreciate you helping as many people as you do, and you seem to have a lot of experience, but you tend to be an asshole sometimes, i think you should try to work on that. :smile:

please people, no fighting, acn't we make this a happy forum?

from the sound of it,
you're not a very experienced grower
either.
like i said to vivid, sorry that you had trouble with cakes.
most folks find them extremely easy to fruit
and very very rsistant to contams, not to mention tat they fruit at least 1-3 weeks quicker than casings.
and i have grown hundreds of them.
i've done birdseed, straw, dung, liquid, etc.
i know what i'm talking about and i'll take the pepsi challenge with any chump who trys telling folks that cakes suck.

you're right, hippie. I'm NOT extremely experienced. but, i've grown, a friend of mine is growing, and we both get pretty much the same results off of cakes and casings. not to mention 99% of the experienced growers here preffer casings much more than cakes. but, if that's your prefference, then i guess there's no arguement here. i just have a different opinion than you.
