Illegal mushroom operation put out of business

Frostburg home allegedly housed extensive laboratory

From Staff Reports Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News Mon Oct 04, 2010, 07:59 AM EDT

— FROSTBURG — A psilocybin mushroom growing operation was put out of business Saturday evening after it was discovered in a Vale Summit residence when the Allegany County Bureau of Police showed up to serve an arrest warrant in an unrelated matter.

Officers made contact with several people who were at the residence and attempted to determine if the wanted female subject was present. She was not and remained at large late Sunday afternoon.

However, while speaking with the occupants, one of the officers observed approximately 40 plastic totes or containers covered with plexiglass. The containers appeared to contain, what the officer identified as controlled dangerous substances, psyilocybin hallucinogenic mushrooms, growing in the containers.

“The officer also observed numerous jars of what appeared to be dried psilocybin hallucinogenic mushrooms, incubator, dehydrators, air purifiers, grow lights and  various other growing and processing equipment and, again, based on his CDS training, he recognized this as an illegal psilocybin mushroom growing lab,” said Bureau Police Chief J. Robert Dick.

Police secured the area, obtained a search warrant and received assistance from the Allegany County Narcotics Task Force before one person was taken into custody on a marijuana charge.

Additional arrests were expected some time Sunday. “This was a pretty elaborate operation, a full processing plant for hallucinogenic mushrooms, a schedule 1 illegal substance that is in the same category as heroin and LSD,” said Dick.

The search of the premises, dismantling of the growing lab, seizure of the large quantity of psilocybin hallucinogenic mushrooms, approximately 100 jars of active spores and all related growing lab equipment took several hours.

An undetermined amount of psilocybin mushrooms were seized. The street value of the seized mushrooms was not known.

“We’re pleased to shut this lab down and get these drugs off the street. This illegal laboratory gave the suspects capability of continual production of this hallucinogenic mushrooms. These are dangerous drugs,” said Dick.

There are more people imprisoned for the commission of drug offenses in the United States - close to 500,000 - than are incarcerated in England, France, Germany, and Japan for all crimes combined.  Examined in another way, the United States has 100,000 more people incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses than all the countries of the European Union combined, despite the fact that the European Union has 100 million more citizens. :crankey:

I once asked a family friend who is a cop about busting people with mushrooms.  He said he doesn't know the first fucking thing about IDing them, but they are usually pretty obvious as people don't keep shiitake in a plastic baggie in their sock drawer.

P.S. I guess anything is a "lab" these days.  Got a stockpot and a few PF jars waiting to get boiled?  Well guess what mr. scientist, that's a lab.

Id fight it all the way to the supreme court. A schedule 1 drug has to have a high potential for addiction. how many people do you know that are addicted to mushies? Exactly. Short term high tolerance.

Sucks for the household or grower. I mean someone that was either living there or was known to stay there had a warrant. Just a screwed up situation. I mean even if it was not out in the open they could have found it either by checking a room or maybe peaking into an outside window.

I guess that is why they say don't grow where you party and and don't grow if you have roommates/housemates.

In what way are the mushrooms dangerous? OD?
That's quite a laugh because I believe you'd have to try first off. Then you'd be so fucking high after eating a good amount that you'd forget you were trying to eat enough to die and wander off someplace.

For the mushrooms to be dangerous the people using them have to be ignorant (or dumb as shit). How to alleviate this ignorance? Well besides the shroomery and like websites maybe the govt could explain to ppl that a person can use these drugs safely, but when misused they are harmful? Maybe teach responsibility instead of acting like a parent disciplining a five year old.

Something is ironic if it accomplishes the opposite of its intended purpose.  I think his name suits him quite well.  And the word you wanted was "coincidental."

Statements like this from law enforcement agents indicate how little they actually know about the substances that they arrest people for. The scheduling system is so misleading.
