Shit is really too funny, in the 2nd worst desert city, shits so corrupt.
Officials barely address naked officer questions
Colin Atagi • The Desert Sun • October 1, 2010
Officials in Cathedral City had little to say Thursday about the most talked-about news in town: The suspension of a police officer who is accused of jumping naked into a swimming pool.
“This is an active investigation and it would be inappropriate for it to be discussed publicly until it's been investigated thoroughly,” Cathedral City Mayor Kathy DeRosa said.
Police Chief Stan Henry also wouldn't answer questions about the Wednesday incident at a home on Maria Road.
The department, along with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, is investigating whether the officer acted inappropriately while responding to a 3:45 a.m. noise complaint.
Three of the four people who were present told The Desert Sun that the officer removed his clothes and gun, jumped into the pool and flirted with three women who were in the pool after they jokingly invited him to come in.
The husband of one of the women then called 911 and the officer grabbed his clothes and left.
According to police records, officers have visited the house on Maria several times over the years, but different people lived there, said police Lt. Chuck Robinson.
The present occupants told The Desert Sun they had lived in Cathedral City for about 15 years and had never had any previous contacts with the police.
Ron Cottingham, president of the Peace Officers Research Association of California, called the Cathedral City incident a “highly unusual allegation.”
Cottingham said it's not uncommon for people to offer food or drinks to officers knocking on their doors.
“Because the persons themselves are now the focus of attention of law enforcement, they also try to do something to defuse the situation and say, ‘Officer, we're not bad people,'” he said.
Still, officers are trained to maintain their professional demeanor in all interactions.
“Anything we do on the job can always lead to litigation, no matter what,” Cottingham said. “So it's always best to be on your most professional, courteous behavior.”
The Wednesday incident resulted in the third Cathedral City officer in 11 days being placed on administrative leave.
One of those officers, involved in a fatal Sept. 19 shooting, returned to work this week.
The officer involved in a Sept. 27 incident described as an attempted “suicide-by-cop” is set to return next week, putting 53 of Cathedral City's 54 officers on duty.
