Microwawe sterilized PJ's compost?

Hi my rabbit got a few questions... he had 3 pf casing with straight verm, once the rabbit received his promised compost from anather trusted rabbit he was so eager to try it out that he decided to make a new tray... since he didnt have much time he decided to sterilize the compost in the microwawe, even though he was told to bake it in the oven for 90 minutes... he nuked the compost for 10 minutes... stuck it in the fridge for 5 minutes then added some cold water with perioxide on the side and mixed it nicely with the old casing... he was exptecting a total failure due to his impatience and unsterile procedures... but after 2 days in the incubator the casing looks nice and smells good and mycelium is eating up the compost... now rabbits question is... can it still get contraminated even though everything is just going fine right now?

yes it could.
it might not.
Depends on what precautions you take.. and how careful you are at all times.
You can contaminate an entirely colonized casing if you are careless.. but if you nuked it for 10 minutes, and was clean with it.. i'd hope it would be ok!!
good luck.. time will tell!

rabbit is very happy mycelium is ripping throuigh the compost
i guess 4-5 days maybe less and the whole thing will be colonized, rabbit said there is no room in the tray for additional casing so he will fruit right of the substrate...
the substrate is about 2 inches deep... he is hoping to get good and big fruits

My foaf has semi/sterilized compost in large popcorn size tupperware type containers - in a microwave, many times - with great results.
Trick in/part is that it is moist (creates some internal steam - in the container) & repeating the microwaving - several times to insure the whole batch recieves ample heat.
However, if it is a raw dung and/or green (manure based) compost, it will create one hell of a nasty smell, venting from the microwave.
If it is well composted & mature, the smell is not overbearing (barn yard like - but not pure spurting shit like).

the compost doesn't smell that bad pretty earthy and good! Glad to hear your friend has had sucess using microwaves to sterilize/pasturize compost. Also what you say about moisture content is true, so my friend says good stuff...

Right. A mature compost doesnt smell like sh*t. Just a earthy garden/barnyard smell. I'm also working on microwave sterilization of WBS. Tests of presoaked pints -- look promising. 6T (aka Mycota)
