Activism in America (you can make a difference)
    #1328286 - 02/23/03 09:38 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Skikid16 gently reminded me again that I promised to create a thread about how to make a difference politically in the US.

Ok, here is where to start.

First of all the best way to make a difference is NOT to join NORML and give them some money!  That may ease your conscience but it will never be as effective as other things you can do.

In every state I am aware of there is a political office called the "Precinct Commiteeman".  S/he is elected either every 2-4 years and is responsible for the election of the county/parish Chairman of the party you belong to.

Run for that office.  Where I live, and this isn't much different from anywhere else in the US, you only need 5 signatures to be placed on the ballot.  Then get a list of registered voters of your party from the local board of election.  Go to their houses and talk to them about how you would like to make a difference.  Don't talk about drugs or political issues but try to get a feel for where they are coming from and tell them you are just trying to help.

If you are 18 years of age or older you can run and win this race.  Most people don't even know this position exists and yet they vote on it every 2-4 years.

Once you are elected get involved in your party.  This really doesn't take much as every party is looking for volunteers.  They will have various fund raisers and other political events to attend and some very powerful and influential politicians will go there and you can talk to them personally.

This will connect you to local politicians and even national ones.

I have met and am known by various national politicians through this process.  I have even had tea with Barbara Bush (the President's mother) because I got a little involved.

When you meet someone like a politician from your state congress mention that you might like to come down there and see the Capital building sometime.  They might even tell you to let them know when you are down there so they can see you.  The same is true for Congressmen and sometimes even senators.  I have been in the office of many of them and even helped them decide certain issues in a few "back rooms".

Most people do not realize how easy it is to get on the inside track of things.  I have helped 18 year olds get elected so age isn't even much of a factor.  And I not talking about the Precinct Commiteemanship here.  I am talking about real bona fide politicians that make real policy decisions.  Our state assembly had an 18 year old elected to it last term.

You also can run for a real office yourself or work on the campaigns of other politicians.  If you work on one of those campaigns get your party chairman to appoint you to a campaign and get as close to the candidate as you can.  Be very helpful etc.  Once you help someone get elected you have no idea how much influence you can have.

If anyone has any specific questions I will try to answer them.

Good luck!

Approximately home much time does this position demand?

Oh, and thank you so much for posting.

The sad truth of it is that most precinct committee people do not spend any time at their position.

They run for the "prestige" of it and then they don't do jack shit.  :frown:This is another reason that with just a little effort you get to meet all sorts of people and have al sorts of influence.

In our county the average anount of time you spend if you are active is the four fundraisers we have each year and the two weeks right before each election.

You're welcome!  I am only sorry it took so long to post this.

Cheers,

Buddy, I'm telling you and Revelation it can't be that hard!

Do a little research.  You guys have political parties!  There is a "ground level" somewhere.  All you have to do is find it!

From that tiny platform you can change the world, seriously.

I'll have to follow up on that when I get out of the military.
