Canada... Country of the future

In Canada, there isn't a strong sense of who we are. For some reason our media thinks that we have to have a national identity. They give this to us in really lame-ass ways. An example: When "Who wants to be a millionaire?" was what everybody was watching on TV we had a special on one night that was Who wants to be a millionaire the Canadian edition. As though we have to try and match shitty TV show for shitty TV show with the US. They try to make us feel proud about being Canadian but actually just make us feel that we have to exist relative to Americans.
"We should all be proud because that guy who plays Austin Powers, and the director of Titanic, and that other funny guy who was the pet detective, and that guy with the skateboard who does gross stuff on MTV and that fat guy who died are all Canadians!"
But it's like "Wow neat, I didn't know he was a sell-out too."
Without a strong national identity, we're a pretty peaceful bunch. If the government was like "People of Canada, we have to go fight a war!" I'd be like yeah uh huh go away. There are two people I know who would go to war in the name of Canada. One is a loser, and the other is a loser. I mean not only did they not fit in at school, but they aren't very fun guys. Like, deranged and mean yet innefectual. Imagine a rabid dog with mono and no testosterone. Apart from them everybody I know shares the dream of being told to go to war and not going. I mean, it's the Canadian dream! Oh wait, no we don't exist relative to the americans, we don't have a Canadian dream, I mean, maybe if we weren't awake we would but.. yeah.
Canada is this big country with a bunch of distinct cultures some of which don't get along very well, and we all live under this.. thing called the Canadian governent. For some reason we elect people and then rather than uniting behind them we insult them, make fun of them, get pissed off at them, throw coffee and pies at them and then vote for them again. It's true, and it's kinda funny. But the effect of it all is that we're all living in a country with lots of personal freedom without feeling like we owe anything to the government. It's not like "Oh thank you government for giving me my freedom, can I kiss your ass please?"
Also, we are a Godless country. That's right, I don't know how large the Christian presence is here in Canada, but it's got weak little baby arms thats for sure. When I see American TV people are always thanking God, and y'know, I think that's the only place I've ever seen people thank God. On the airwaves from the US.
So the short of the long is that I'm proud of living in a country so lacking in pride. I tihnk it's great, and I think the attitude towards our government and country is the attitude of the future.

watch bowling for columbine, and i think you might change your mind... at least you guys are free to think, feel, say and do as you please, and are not mass-manipulated and filled with fear at the level the american citizens are... im not saying there is no manipulation, because there is everywhere, but the states is the seizefire(sp?) of it...

Canada rules
I take pride in being Canadian, but I'm not patriotic. "Patriotism is a virtue of the wicked" I've heard before.

This is a hopeful prediction, but I feel that The Great Imbecile & crew won't make it through this year.

Although I live in Canada, I'm not Canadian. In fact, I don't consider my self to belong to any nation, I am a human being and I reject any labels people may throw at me. That's the way of the future my friend.

Canada is a wonderful country. They seem devoid of the manufactured paranoia that we suffer from here in the states. Bowling for Columbine is a real eye opener in more ways than one, highly recommended! Moore is a rabble-rouser but I think we need more people like him, it might wake up the population.

Yeah, that's what I mean, only I label that feeling of not belonging to any nation as being Canadian, just cause it's a common way Canadians I know are.

Canada rules! [If you are white, male and middle class!]
[Between 1989 and 1997 the number of children living in poverty increased by 58%.
Canada is fifth among industrialized countries in the rate of children under the age of 14 killed with guns, following the US, Finland, Northern Ireland and Israel.
Between 1989 and 1993, Aboriginal women were more than three times as likely to commit suicide than were non-Aboriginal women.
Among Aboriginal youth (5-14), violent deaths (by accidents, poison and drowning) account for more one-third of deaths, compared to per cent for Canada.
According to the 1996 Census, 43.4 per cent of Aboriginal people, 35.9 per cent of visible minorities and 30.8 per cent of persons with disabilities were poor in 1995.
The death rate for Aboriginal Canadians is six times the national average and the infant mortality rates are more than twice the national average.
A woman is sexually assaulted by forced sexual intercourse every 17 minutes in Canada.
In 1995, there were 804 deaths (695 men and 108 women) in Canada attributable to illicit drugs.]

Hello Bivalve, your point is well taken, you could look at any country and find faults. The question is how would the USA do in all of the categories you've mentioned? Poorly I'm sure. Your statistical onslaught misses the point made by Michael Moore in his most recent film, that while no nation is perfect the Canadian model is more socially responsible than ours(USA). I know this to be true by experience as well, I'm an American who has spent some time in Canada. By the way my wife is black and we found more acceptance in Toronto as a mixed race couple than we ever had in Cleveland. We liked it enough to consider moving there. Hopefully this year.

Yup, my post was never meant to say Canada didn't have problems. I was more talking about Canadian's attitudes towards government, and the overall feeling that living in Canada just means working, and doing what you want without a government pushing you to do things for your "country."
I also don't mean to attack the US.
And I mean, those statistics are all good and nice, but it's all relative.. I'd be surprised if Canada had a bad track record in treating its natives compared to the rest of the world etc. etc.

So true... Im glad I live somewhere that allows me to express my ideas and get some feedback from others without being labeled "anti-canadian" or some bull. And I find that here, people are more apt to listen to your ideas, and maybe actually discuss them with you, rather than label you "liberal" or "conservative" and just ignore them based on that label.
