its not really necessary for me, personally.
2gb of ram is plenty to run firefox and an ssh connection to the server.

you mean for the server to run ssh or for the pc to handle ssh? for a server idk for a host computer it's MORE than enough. and remember ssh is public key cryptography i don't think it takes too much bandwidth i could be wrong. anyway whatever

Well, that's interesting. Thanks for that info, and thanks to all who responded. I learned a bit here.

i need very little in the way of horsepower for both the server and clients.
the server is an old Pentium D (which i would replace with an Intel Atom if it died tomorrow). as far as clients.. i have 2 C2D machines, one Atom based machine, and one ARM machine.. very little power in all of them. my software is really light and efficiently written though so i dont need that much.
i use the server for streaming media, file storage (share things over NFS), apache and mysql for a web development testing environment, ftp, ssh, IRC client, feed reader and bittorrent client. it runs completely headless.. no GUI environment at all. all CLI.
the client machines mostly just run firefox, a media player for video, text-based audio player, and ssh.
one of my machines is used pretty much exclusively for web design/development and gimp/inkscape image stuff.
the server has about 3tb of storage and its all connected either over a gigabit or wireless-n network. the clients dont need much storage space either.
if you strip away all the extra fat there is no need for a 64bit os.. you def have to know what youre doing though.
