Take the Quiz: Do YOU Walk the Walk?

The US is one of the most religious nations on the planet yet a new poll by the Pew Research Center found that most of us are surprisingly ignorant about religion.
The PRC quizzed a representative sampling of Americans about religion. The questions were very basic questions like:
What are the names of the four gospels? Is the Golden Rule one of the Ten Commandments? Who inspired the Protestant Reformation?
You wanna know what group was least ignorant about religion? Atheists. After Atheists the least ignorant were Jews and Mormons. Catholics scored among the lowest.
Why would this be? My guess is that Atheists are open-minded and so they studied religion before coming to Atheism. They're also able to think critically and so after studying the wild mish-mash of contradicting and often idiotic set of religious beliefs, they reach the inescapable conclusion that religion is a load of bullshit.
Meanwhile, IMO religious people tend to be non-thinkers who just follow whatever belief system best fits their own desires. Witness how god told Bush and Bin Ladin the opposite thing, though more likely they each told themselves what they wanted to hear.
How religious are YOU? How well would YOU do on this test? I scored in the 93rd percentile. That means that only 7% of Americans scored better than me.
And I'm a non-believer. Go figure.
Click to take the test. Then post your percentile score.
-------------------- Republican Values: 1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you. 2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child. 3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer. 4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Thoroughly unsurprising.
1) 99% of U.S. atheists were raised religious.
2) True believers have no interest in knowing ANYTHING about world religions, because they're all "devil worship".
3) It's easier to believe something if you don't examine it too closely...
Also: Atheist, 93% score, only one I missed was when does the Jewish Sabbath begin.

I only got 47% and I was raised an atheist/agnostic and never had any interest in it. Mind you the test included multiple religions so it's not really suprising those who aren't indoctrinated into any particular religion would do better. A better test would be to poll atheists vs. christians on christianity alone.

Actually, it is pretty surprising.
You seem to be implicitly assuming that religious people are closed-minded and never question the religion they're born into or make any effort to understand the hundreds of other religions out there.
This is absolutely true, of course, but it's considered extremely rude when Chris Hitchens or Richard Dawkins says it. This poll strikes at the very heart of the American attitude that religion is a positive, rather than a negative, mental attribute.

You seem to be saying that more fervent belief in Christianity must necessarily cause people to be ignorant about every other religion.
Why should this be so? Again, you're right, but I think this was a great poll and you seem to think it was a stupid one and I can't figure out why. Unless you think the results were too obvious.

Well yeah, indoctrination and fervent belief is clearly closed minded for it's in its very nature to be so, any reasonable person assumes that but you're of course correct that this proves it and that's pretty cool.

93% Missed the Jewish Sabbath... Was raised as a Christian and would definitely not identify myself as an atheist.
The sheer amount of religious individuals is going to skew the numbers to the low end when compared to a minority group known for highly analytical thought.

Most religious nation on the planet? Does the poll imply that? I think latin america, the middle east, even africa - they are all much more religious regions than the US. I think of the US as one of the most secular nations on the planet.
edit - I got 80%

The original article where I found this says it's "one of the most religious nations". Lemme see if I can find it again and I'll post the link.

I would be considered religious. I scored 87%, the two questions I missed were "the first great awakening" and one of the "is it buddhist or hindu" because I am not so versed in those.
So I guess I did ok. 3% of people were more aware than me.
My guess is anybody can use atheism or religion to justify about anything which is what most seem to do.
I do try to think. Have tried to particiapte in life for my and others good in some meaningful way.
Hope that don't fuck up your theory about the stupid shit believers too much Diploid....
oh and btw - I live the walk, as to your thread title. (Silly 'ol me! )

Jeez, no wonder we're so fucked up. That graph is depressing. Especially given how readily we go kill people in other countries despite most religions' admonitions against.

Interesting that the nations which are most acceptant of the theory of evolution have almost all been rich and fertile for a long time.
Seems to show that religion provides security when money and food cannot.

I suspect that because the US is far from most religious.

Probably illegal not to be or as good as, but then again you would have thought westerners live there.
