Denton man charged with growing mushrooms
By: WAYNE CARTER, Staff Writer February 20, 2003
DENTON - A 67-year-old Denton man has been charged with growing hallucinogenic mushrooms at his Denton business.
The Caroline County Drug Task Force arrested John Henry Wheatley on Wednesday morning, Feb. 12 and shut down what law enforcement officials allege could be the largest hallucinogenic Psilocybin growing operation on the Eastern Shore.
Wheatley, of 23097 Tuckahoe Springs Drive, was arrested on several drug possession and distribution charges after warrants served by the task force at his home and his business, which is known as Crystal Enterprises, located at 802 Crystal Ave., in Denton.
At the business location, police say they discovered a substantial Psilocybin - commonly known as a mushroom - grow operation secreted in the basement of the building.
They also found a large quantity of harvested mushrooms in a freezer in another part of the building.
Wheatley was charged with 11 counts of possession of Psilocybin, possession with intent to distribute, manufacturing, possession of CDS manufacturing equipment, maintaining a common nuisance and two counts of distribution of Psilocybin.
Wheatley was released on $50,000 bail.
The investigation netted more than 4r pounds of suspected hallucinogenic mushrooms. According to a press release from the state's attorney's office, the seized mushrooms had a conservative street value of about $20,000.
According to the statement, the grow had the potential for harvesting about 7 pounds of mushrooms each month. The grow operation, according to charging documents, was complete with two rooms, insulated with straw and temperature and humidity control equipment.
Wheatley is the owner of the building, and while he leases space to other businesses in the facility, they were not a part of the investigation.
The task force had been conducting the investigation for several months after receiving complaints about the grow operation, according to the state's attorney's office. Undercover officers allegedly made two controlled purchases from Wheatley in late January and early February.
In addition to the mushrooms, growing paraphernalia, a shotgun and a Ford Ranger pickup were seized from the Crystal Avenue building.
Police also seized several documents and a computer at Wheatley's home and they will be examined as a part of the investigation.
Wheatley currently is scheduled to go before Judge Douglas Evergam in District Court on March 13.
Police said families should be aware of broken up pieces of what appears to be dried fruit or pieces of melba toast crackers if they suspect someone in their family has been in possession of Psilocybin, and should contact local police agencies or the drug task force if they have any concerns.
The Caroline County Drug Task Force was assisted by Maryland State Police, Caroline County Sheriff's Department, Denton Police Department and Mid-Shore County Drug Task Forces from Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties.
The Greensboro Fire Department also assisted with lighting and manpower during the dismantling of the grow operation.

Wow..interesting article. Why in the fuck was this guys leasing out buildings and running a grow shop in the others? Pretty damn stupid if you ask me. But ppl do stupid things from time to time.
Sorry to see another fellow mushrooms lover fall prey to the system.
Good point Chills. I read a study that since DARE came into effect.. drug crimes rose something like %30 in that area.
