My experiences with PF tek were great!
I never got below 5 dry grams per cake and averaged around 10-11 dry grams per cake.
Best yield off 2 flushes of 12 cakes was around 8.5-9 dry ounces.
I think it went good because I took the time to read and do research before jumping into things (like a lot of noobs seem to do these days) and also because of my sterile procedures and of course, all the great help I got BITD from fellow shroomerites.

if you follow the PF-Tek and use it in conjunction with a properly built shotgun FC you will have great results. The only way i could explain someone getting bad results using this method is due to incompetence.

Agreed. Plus it's a great way to get to know the life cycle of the fungus.

I love cakes. You can do it without a PC with a 100% success rate if you are careful and follow the tek. I have been growing for almost 2 years and still love the PF tek. I just recently started trying tubs and I'm using pf cakes as spawn in those! (So far I've had good results using pf cakes for spawn)
I have done a lot of pf cakes and I can count on one hand the number of crumby producing cakes I've had. Almost every cake I have ever made has produced 3-4 g dry at the least.
The only bad experience I ever had with the pf tek was due to buying spores from a nonvendor. Make sure you buy from a trusted Shroomery vendor, you'll thank yourself.

My friends and I have been doing cakes awhile... I'm recently going to 50/50+ casing, you know to utilize space better, make the fruits grow UP... but the pf tek is a little outdated... such as using 3.5:1 verm/brf where 2:1:1 verm/brf/water works great, and takes a lot of work out of judging field capacity, plus more food, etc.. ymmv
I'd suggest "dunk and roll" and using a "shotgun FC" (search for those) to make sure you got plenty of fresh air while retaining humidity.. get a gauge and dial it in... make sure your conditions are perfect... just keep reading and talking to people and you should be fine...
Peace

Well first time for me so... So far so good. I am guessing the MS inoculation is what is holding me beck. Almost 4 weeks now and one I just birthed on last Sunday, 2 more tomorrow, and 1 more next Monday. That is out of 12 jars. The rest are catching up and 2 did nothing. So I reinoculated them a few days ago and I "think" I see something, still to soon. BTW, 2 different types of spores 6 and 6.
Other than that all is going great. I followed the RR BRF video (PFtek + SGFT) to a tee and even though some of mine are late colonizers not one has been contaminated. That said the one I forgot to put a dry verm layer on it was the 1st to colonize, and was contam free.
My baby is now 1 day old.
I think it is a pretty fool proof way to start with some mushrooms and learn while you read up and go bulk substrate, whether it be straw or WBS or any other way.
This is such a fun hobby and by golly, if any thing it makes you clean your house more.

Only other hobby I ever had like that was back in the day- I had a roommate who did meth.
I don't know about anybody else, but I usually have some cakes going alongside my tubs. Different times, different reasons, but pretty much all the time

Your roommate was a hobby? lol jk... She's always been like that.. it's her thing.. We grow herbs\vegetables, cook, etc... It's not a bad idea to keep a clean house.. maybe not necessary in your case, but not bad information...

Yeah more jars, more beer, more bread, more dehydrating and canning of the gardens treats, not to mention the chanterelles I will find this year and what ever else that needs to be saved. Thank god for the deep freeze.

Cakes were fun. They were a relatively easy concept to grasp with enough reading. Having now tried WBS spawning to coir, I'd never do cakes again. However, they are still awesome and I think a good stepping stone.

I was in Maggie Valley (east NC - which, coincidently, used to be the biggest exporter of micah - aka vermiculite sorta)... Took a nature walk, bout a half mile and found about 50 different species of mushrooms Right on man..

IME cakes blow. They're only worth it if you spawn the cakes. I've gotten anywhere from 2 - 5+ g per cake. Check out my TEK in my sig for the technique. Grow using WBS, you'll thank me later.

Yes,after two flushes.Don't roll your eyes at me,not my fault you never mastered cakes and got more then 6g dry per cake.I was averaging 10-11 dry grams per cake per flush over 2 flushes back when I was working with some Amazon spores I acquired from Ralphster BITD.With the South American's I was averaging 7-9 grams dry per cake.
Think about it,if you got 5g dry from each cake over two flushes....
5 dry grams x 12 cakes x 2 flushes = 120g dry...almost 4.25 ounces...so how is a HP to just over a HP so far fetched
