Voters Thoughts on Legalizing Medical Marijuana in South Dakota September 27, 2010 - KDLT

When you head to the polls this November you'll have many decisions to make including how you'll vote on Measure 13 which would legalize medical marijuana in South Dakota. Many are speaking out-for and against the issue.
"There's only one reason I came out to speak and that's because this is a very personal issue for me. This is not a theoretical issue, this is not an abstract issue, this is personal,” said Kermit Staggers, who supports Measure 13.
Many know Kermit Staggers as a Sioux Falls city councilman and former candidate for mayor. Now, Staggers is in the same boat as many who are supporting Initiative measure 13, which would legalize medical marijuana.
"I know someone who is very close to me that is in constant pain all the time. And this person is taking a lot of heavy medication, prescribed of course, by doctors, and this person is still in pain,” Staggers said.
Many in favor of this measure say that is there main reason of support, there are many who could medically benefit from marijuana.
"This will allow in this state the doctors to have as an alternative marijuana. After they've had that established relationship. That's very important. Most states don't require that long term established relationship,” said Tony Ryan, a Former Police Officer of Denver Colorado.
But those who oppose the measure say the cons outweigh the pros.
“I think we can learn form the experience in the 14 states that have legalized marijuana for medical use. There are some significant problems occurring. Law enforcement in particular is seeing some violent crime associated with marijuana dispensaries, the idea it was intended for the sick and elderly has been replaced by the fact that over 90 percent of the medical marijuana prescriptions are for pain,” said Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead.
And some say even those who do use it properly could end up with some unnecessary side effects.
"We know that the use of any inhaled agent but marijuana specifically actually decreases the body's ability to fight off infection. And that can be a real problem in someone who's immune compromised and already perhaps struggling to stay healthy,” said Dr. Blake Curd, who opposes the measure.
The final decision will be up to the voters, when they head to the polls in just a matter of weeks.
The measure almost passed in 2006, but failed by about 4%. Both sides of the issue do agree on one thing, they say it's important for citizens to be informed on this issue.

I would like those jackasses to clarify what they mean. Every prescription drug on the market has at least 10 times the side effects that are far more damaging than marijuana does. Some people should just keep their opinions to themselves.

"We know that the use of any inhaled agent almost, marijuana specifically, actually decreases the bodys ability to fight off infection"
Don't they give marijuana to aids patients?
-------------------- December 1960: "They took the drug one evening at Leary's house and had a profound experience, during which Ginsburg prophetically realized that it was a time to start "a peace and love movement". He then ran naked around the house, attempted to get Kruschev and Kennedy on the telephone and announced to the operator that he was God."
