Has anyone been growing edibles as a cover up for your real intentions? Portobello is a pretty common looking edible that wont make people look twice.

I had a friend many years ago that was only growing edibles and got busted for growing illegals. He sold his edibles to gourmet chefs in the area. Somebody overheard one of the chefs talking about where he gets his mushrooms. Police came with a search warrant, found his "drug lab", and arrested him. Long story short, he was never charged with a crime, but lost around $30K in legal fees and destroyed equipment.

I remember you telling that story once before. That's all the proof anyone should need to see that the war on drugs can fuck up someone's life or career when they aren't even doing anything deemed illegal. Fucking ridiculous.

I know a lot of people who only grow edibles.
That is fucked up. I'm going to only grow oyster and reshi mushrooms through a non-profit. That way if they want to come destroy everything the non-profit will sue and I won't be out a dime. That way they will have to think twice before an illegal malicious raid.

In my friends case, they didn't think at all. They had a statement from a confidential informant (the person that overheard the chef talking about buying mushrooms). They had witnessed him selling mushrooms (legal ones, though they did not know this) on several occasions. They had evidence of a mushroom growing operation from they trash the took from his house (this was a while ago). With some sneaky writing on the affidavit, they had enough to get a search warrant.

This thread gives me a great pointer. Personally throw out trash.
What evidence can they possibly gather (besides trash) to obtain a search warrant?

They can look in your windows. They can have a drug sniffing dog sniff around your house and car. They can use the area you live in (such as "a known area for drug trafficking"). They can use the number of people visiting your house (visited by many people for short periods at all times of the day and night, common to drug houses). They can use lights being on (grow lights). They can use your electric bill (uses much more power than other houses in the area, common with marijuana labs). They can use your quality of life vs. your declared income (drives a new BMW, but works only one day a week at Burger King). GPS tracker on your car. The list goes on...
To get a search warrant, they will combine several of the above along with a blurb about their experience as peace officers trained to find illegal drug operations and how the items they have listed are common to illegal drug operations.

So basically, they can get it if they want it no matter what. thats great!
A better question would be what precautions do people take?

Don't tell anyone about it. That's probably the biggest mistake you're likely to make, IMO.

From talking to a prosecutor I know well, the search warrant process is essentially a "rubber stamp" and (their words) "I have never seen Judge X turn down a warrant". This prosecutor had been doing their job there for at least half a decade.
