No, but this girl I know did when she was younger. She never told me much about it, but what I heard sounded awesome.

My uncle lives on a boat.
He's got a house too but he loves the ocean.

my biggest concern is getting used to the motion of the boat. second concern is storms and what boat i should buy.

i would eventually like to be able to sail from california to mexico and on to south america.

any stories or input would be appreciated.

Check out the book "Dove" - it is the story of a 16y/o kid in the 70's who sailed around the world and was commissioned by National Geographic to write about it.

I also want to live on a sail boat - but have never sailed.

I've recently moved near the ocean, and have discovered a local sailing organization. There are several organizations actually, and most cost about $500/year to join - however, they teach you how to sail, and offer a variety of courses about weather, rigging, water rescue, etc. In addition, they offer a variety of vessels which you can borrow for the day and even some you can take out for a weekend or more, including sea kayaks.

Sounds like the best way to learn for someone without any friends with experience or a boat.

I am looking forward to signing up in the Spring.

i love sailing. i've never sailed anything bigger than 14ft though. i need to find the right boat. i want to be able to DIY if anything ever needs maintenance.

sailing is simple. the first time i ever sailed i felt as i had always known how. i didn't even take proper lessons. i'd recommend finding a small day sailer on Craig's List.

I have a similar land based idea, I want to buy a school bus and turn it into an RV to live in for a few years.

I'd be just as keen with the prospect of a sail boat but I hadn't taken the notion seriously as I know not a damn thing about sailing. One summer I refinished the teak and cleaned the deck for a fellow for cash who was supposed to teach me some stuff but never followed through.

i taught myself how to sail on a 1970's amf alcort puffer like this one.

it was real simple to learn. it has it's hazards but with a little caution it can become a rewarding experience. i sailed er in some hurricane leftovers a month after sailing for the first time, it was way nice. i'm amazed i never capsized er. :rasta:

i recently sold my sunfish cause i was supposed to move to mejico but it never came through and i now wish i hadn't.  :rocket: i capsized er the first time ever out. i had to get towed to shore by a bass boat.

big wave laser sailing another 14 footer..

I'm teaching myself to sail on a 14' C-Lark.  My dream is to one day have a large enough boat that me and the family can do some extended cruising.

It's funny that you mention sailing the west coast of N and S America.  I understand it's actually one of the more uncomfortable places to do any extended sailing (weird currents, wind, waves, etc.).  But I say who cares?  It will make you a better sailer I say.

Here's one of my "learning" experiences:

I've always wanted to live-abord.

unfortunatly, i've got this problem where i don't own a 28' boat, which is probably the smallest craft i think i would try to live solo on. i've lived in tents, a van, a pop-up camper, etc, so i have enough experience living in confined spaces to know what would be a reasonable minimum amount of space.

i can't conceive of affording such a boat any time soon, even owner built.

Hobbs: busses are great. i spent some time traveling with a kitchen based in a 40' harvester. it was really cramped, but there where several of us and the back third was a kitchen.

If you're willing to put in your own elbow grease, you can own a 28 footer for under 5grand.  It will be old and probably need some work, but you can buy a solid fixer upper for that.

5k is a lot of money. that's not much less than what i could build a new one for, if you don't count the value of my time.

i'm pretty good with logistics, and have designed [but not built] a couple cruisers, and put together estimates on materials.

i'm working with a company with offices in cancun and puerto vallarta. i'll be relocating there as soon as they score some permits and open shop.
i don't want to live in a hotel and think this would be my best option. ideally i'd like to have 2 boats, one in cancun and one in puerto vallarta. if bad weather came in i could just go to a hotel.

boats can be financed and living in mexico isn't all that expensive.

I work with a lady who lived on their boat for 5 years prior to their circumnavigation.  Then they took 7 years to circumnavigate.

Needless to say, she has some stories that make my mind wander and wonder what the fuck I'm doing stuck in a cubicle.
