The Saran Wrap Tek for Cubes
    #1325289 - 02/21/03 07:10 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Next time you case, cover the top of your container with saran wrap and tape it down along the sides, being careful not to cover the filtered air holes predrilled along the sides. Saran is porous, so don't worry too much about ventilation. However, the recovering/colonizing mycelium do need oxygen to flourish and prepare for fruiting, so be sure not to obstruct your ventilation holes when you secure the saran wrap to the casing container. Incubate in total darkness.

When the top casing layer has colonized to your satisfaction, remove from the incubation chamber and allow exposure to direct sunlight, if possible, for a period of no more than 15 minutes. This exposure to direct sunlight will induce the reproductive process of fruiting and kill some contaminative bacteria that may be present. If the intensity of sunlight is weak due to cloud cover, the exposure time can be raised to a duration of one hour, or a full spectrum florescent lamp can be used as a substitute. In all the above scenarios, the saran wrap cover should remain in place.

The fruiting environment should be close to room temperature. The saran wrap cover and filtered ventilation holes negate the need for daily spraying and fanning.

Soon after exposure to light of the proper frequencies and a drop in temperature, the mycelial colonies will pin and begin to fruit. As the fruits mature and grow taller, slits can be made in the saran cover directly above the approaching caps. As the caps press against these slits, they will erupt through the saran layer and continue to grow without restraint.

After harvesting, the casing can be rehydrated and covered again while you await another flush. The used saran cover should be discarded.

Fruiting your casing in this fashion will greatly reduce exposure to possible contaminants and will also save time. You will also be able to leave the casing unattended for several days without worry.

Enjoy

This is exactly like crabyass's plastic wrap tek except for leaving the plastic wrap on and the mush rips through it. Also I have seen someone do this just a little while ago. Still though this is pretty cool.
