Fruit of My Looms!
    #1325246 - 02/21/03 06:35 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I've taken a few days off. In order to start getting my feet wet again art-wise. Art being what I have my degree in, and what I used to love, but I lost touch with it somehow about a decade ago...

So I'm trying to find my way back onto the "production trail," and I'm making a little bit of head way. The following are two pieces, that I kind of liked, from the past 48 hours...

Breaking the Roolz

Blood on Her Hands

Hey, Smack! I'm calling it a night with this one!

It's sort of like Picasso meets Matisse, as reinacted years later by Diebenkorn and Twombly...

Ah, yes... Alcohol and making good art...

True story: When Dennis Hopper (the actor) was a young man in Kansas, he took a painting class from Thomas Hart Benton (the hard drinking Social Realist painter -- and teacher of Jackson Pollock). As Hopper tells it, he was struggling with trying to paint a water color of a still life of some flowers, and Benton came over and looked at what he was doing, and he told the teenage Dennis Hopper, "Kid, one of these days, you're going to have to get tight, and learn how to paint loose!"

I love that story!

There's not supposed to be anything recognizeable in there is there?

I wouldn?t necessarily say that. However, I think the best way to approach it would be like one looking at clouds or a Rorschach test -- interpretation is largely based on your subconscious personality.

I did spend a number of years producing gestural field paintings, where I developed a vocabulary of signs based largely on erotic elements of human form, so those sorts of interpretations are always applicable. "Clytemnestra in Furs" for example could be read as woman as landscape: torso reclined and receding into the background, foreground consisting of spread thighs around a vagina.

However, it could also just as easily be a traditional nature landscape with an extremely flattened foreground, a la Degas, and very similar to Diebenkorn?s, "Urbana," or "Berkeley," series of paintings. I was very much influenced by traditional cubist space in the picture plane, as later developed by both Diebenkorn and deKooning, to name a few...

However, my best advice is to forget all that crap, and just see what you want to in the work. If you like it good, and if you don't, that's ok too...

Yeah, but the words of amateur critics flow off me like water off a duck's back. I didn't mind the bizarre ramblings so much, but it was the re-titling of my picture that was kind of rude, but c'est la vie...

Here's a new one for Smack, Effed, SmashedMe, and all those who appreciate them!
