It would be appreciated if you gave me feedback/advice on my chosen method of mushroom cultivation and/or answered some of these questions?
After reading numerous ways of growing mushrooms the Monotub Tek has appealed to me the most; But I have a fair few questions I would like answered (I apologise for the length of this post and also if it's of a naive nature).
Firstly, is this container any good The one with the blue handle the measurements are 18cm2 x 19cm
Would sterilizing the container by cleaning the lid and the inside of it with a bleach/water solution be adequate for preventing any contamination issues?
I don't know where I could get fresh mushrooms or spores from but I'm sure I could obtain dried mushrooms and I have read that you can Quote:
BigJohnson said: Take a sample of gill and cult it on agar.
; So if I cut a section out of the agar mycelium I could just place it in the substrate and it'd be the equivalent of using a spore syringe?
I am going to use the mycelium cut from the agar so... After I've prepared the holes (just above where the substrate is going to be), sterilized the container with the bleach/water solution and then covered the holes with something porous NOW do/can I fill the container (up to the holes) with the substrate mixture you'd use in the PF Tek?
And after that I'd keep it out of light and in a temperature of ~24 degrees Celsius for ~1 week and then check on it every few days until I see pins and then move it into indirect sunlight?
Is it all right if the tubs I have are completely transparent? Do I have to mask where the substrate/mycelium is?
I do appologise for the amount of questions

my main questions are
where are you planning on doing all this. the things your looking at doing like buying dried shrooms and cutting parts from that and putting it onto agar really require a very sterile environment. you'r going to need a flow hood.
im not saying it cant be done without one but without one your looking at a high contam possibility.
and then when you put your agar slice into your sterilized jars your going to want to use that flow hood if you have one.
and how are you planning on sterilizing your verm/BRF? do you have a pressure cooker? or are you going to do it the boiling way?
my serious advice if you want results is to order a syringe from a sponser who delivers to your area and then follow RR's videos / PF tek method. dont make any variations.
get used to basic cultivation before you try to dive into the more complex methods.

Ok, I have no way of getting to work under a flow hood and I don't have a pressure cooker so I was going to use the boiling method anyway. So you're saying that the risk of contamination associated with how I would carry out this method isn't worth it. I should just do the PF Tek instead (till I get used to cultivating), it's most probably going to have less complications than what I have posted. Thanks for the comments man

pretty much the jist of it.
get used to doing it the basic way. you'll be happy with your results and it will give you a more sense of accomplishment.
what you were trying to do is like never riding a motorcycle before and trying to drive a Hayabusa. or never climbing a mountain and trying to climb MT. McKinley.
ya gotta work your way up.
im still working on getting grains down just right. i keep effing up and keep getting the moisture content to high in my grains.

SGFC is the easiest, cheapest most reliable TEK you will find for your first grow - do a search for the SGFC TEK and if you use it follow the TEK exactly with NO MODIFICATIONS of your own and you will have a good chance of a successful grow.
Dry mushroom on agar will work but you will need good agar skills as you may find much more than just mycelium growing on your agar if using this TEK.
Sponsors are a good idea to take a look at they have clean spores for microscopy if interested, and at affordable prices. (No probs to Aus)
Spore syringe TEKs can also be found by the search engine.
PF tek is a must if you have no PC

I don't think your level of amatuer mycology can handle agar yet. Start with PF tek, using a shotgun fruting chamber and buying spores from the reputable online stores listed on this site. This is my second year learning about this stuff, and I'm still learning alot of new stuff I never knew. So for now take it easy with the advanced stuff and get the hang of standing on your feet.

If I get you right, you want to make up a tub of brf/vermiculite mix and then inoculate it with an agar wedge.
It won't work. Brf/verm has to be done using sterile technique.
Bulk subtsrates (coir/straw/manure) go in tubs and only work when you inoculate them with grain spawn (colonized bird seed or rye).
I hope that clears it up a little for you.

I agree. Propagating a wedge to a pf jar or bulk substrate is not going to work well if at all, without, the use of a glovebox or flowhood and even then it is going to take a significant amount of time for the culture to colonize the substrate.
Your best bet is to use a spore syringe and turn the wedge into a slurry, suck that up with some sterile water and inoculate a pre-sterilized LC mixture with it and then use that to inoculate pf jars.
Mycelium wedge slurry >> Liquid culture Liquid culture >> Pf cakes Pf cakes >> bulk substrate
That's how I would go about it.

Why would u slurry the myc and suck it up instead of dropping a small wedge into the lc jar? just curious.
