Homecoming - Rotting large Trichos

I came home after 3 weeks of absence. Someone cared for my plants, but something must have gone wrong, because there are some problems. I am making separate pots to keep the subject lines and tags in order. I hope it is OK with the local policy.
This post is about a couple of largish Trichocereus cuttings that I planted into open ground (full story with pics here).
I found that two of my big friends had fallen down and were rotting. In the old post, their pictures are labeled as #1 and #2.
How they were (the rightmost two)
How they are now
I'm going to cut them hoping to isolate the rot. Then I'll let them scar and plant again. I still wonder what the hell happened!! They had began to set nice roots, as is apparent from the pics.
The other 3 largish trichs visible in the old happy post are still doing fine (keeping my fingers crossed )

That soil they were in looks quite wet and compact, how's the drainage?
I think they just rotted from excess moisture...Maybe when trying to root them you can do it in pots so you can control moisture and then once they have a good root system then put them in the ground after amending the soil with pumice/perlite/whatever available. By this stage the portion below soil level would have had a chance to cork and this will also help protect it from to much water.
It's a shame to see them rotting.

Yeah, I thought of that in advance though.
First, I didn't water them at all (maybe just the once). I did water nearby plants, though.
More importantly, when I first put the cuttings into the ground, I set them in individual 20-30 cm deep beds of draining cactus mix (about 30% organic soil and 70% inert/draining minerals such as pumice etc), and added a layer of coarse grit for stability and weed smothering.
I'll cut and pot until they (hopefully) recover. Can it be done now that autumn coming? I could keep the patients in my unwarmed greenhouse.
Thanks for the advice and the sympathy

You might get them to put out roots but will probably have to wait until Spring until they do. Just make sure the cut ends callus well before putting in soil.

Two more went down: the leftmost one in the pic above and the one to its left. I'm so sad... only one is surviving now.
I cut up the fallen ones and they're healing in a paper bag. I'll try to pot them up, putting the pots in my mini-greenhouse until spring, when I'll try to plant them into open ground again. I want my trichos (especially bridgesii) to be free-roaming!
By the way, the potted giant (a pachanoid) is back into shape - alive and well. It must be something in the open soil...?

Good to hear your other one is doing well. It sucks when they rot out man... Here in sunny southern cali it seems like it's hard to rot a trich because it's usually so warm and dry... Maybe add more perlite and/or horticultural sand to your mix and improve that drainage.

The last one has just fallen after 2 days of regular full rain.
I just had to do this test and see if any of them could survive. Well, now I know. I cut the rotting parts off and I'm letting it heal with the others.
On the other hand, the small ones I planted in open soil, exposed to rain - rooted plants, not cuttings - are apparently doing fine. I'm surprised, since they're so small... well, I guess the big ones just had no time to set sufficiently established roots.

Yeah man, you gotta keep them dry until they establish roots... Maybe next time try rooting them in completely dry soil inside in a window or something... And if you're worried about your in-ground ones getting too wet, cover them with a tarp when it rains.
