Sierra Nevada’s Stance on Proposition 19 (CA Marijuana Law)

Sierra Nevada’s Stance on Proposition 19 (CA Marijuana Law)

From Sierra Nevada – We’ve been getting lots of calls and email regarding our stance on California’s Proposition 19-which would legalize marijuana if passed. A beer industry group surprised us by linking our name in with their opposition. We had no idea it was happening and we disagree with their position.

This week, the California Beer and Beverage Distributors (CBBD) came out against California Proposition 19—also known as the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010. The CBBD is an industry group that represents the interests of beer distributors and members. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and many other independent craft brewers are associate members of the CBBD.

Although we are members of this organization, we were neither consulted—nor informed of—their decision to take a stand against California Proposition 19. Sierra Nevada’s role as an associate member grants no access or influence on the political agendas of the CBBD, and we had no knowledge of the organization’s intention to fight this ballot proposition.

The CBBD does not represent Sierra Nevada’s political interests in any way, and does not represent the brewery’s stance on the issue. We’ve requested the CBBD to remove our name from their list of members, and also to disassociate the brewery from this and any future political actions.

Over the past three decades, Sierra Nevada has maintained neutrality concerning political issues. We feel that people have the obligation to choose what is right for themselves without influence from outside interests. We regret any implied association with this action by the CBBD, and maintain our independence and neutrality regarding matters of politics.

Sierra Nevada just scored like 5000 points in my book. I think I may need to stop drinking other beer lol. I feel like returning the 6r I just bought and getting some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

I've already done my drinking tonight, but tomorrow i'll be grabbing a 6er of pale ale. Very good stuff, and reading makes me want one.

Now that's a damn good PR move. Marijuana users have a bigger impact than most companies realize, Sierra Nevada is one of the few that gets it.

Remember what happened when Kelloggs dropped Michael Phelps when he got caught smoking weed? Their move backfired and their stock plummeted.

Do you like weed? Well then you better start liking their beer.

That's a wise position for a beer company to make.

That's what's up...

Sierra Nevada is probably my favorite brewery, if i had to choose...

Been drinking their Torpedo extra IPA tonight, and their basic Pale Ale is my favorite "mass produced" Pale Ale...All their brews are good...

And the Brewery is just a drive up the highway from where I live...Considering it's Chico, not surprised :smirk:

Awesome! They just scored BIG TIME in my book.

Its not that they came out in FAVOR of prop 19, but they don't want to be against it. Good neutrality policy

i dont really drink that often but when i get really stoned on a hot day nothing substitutes a micro-brew.

guess what im really stoned and its starting to get hott time to support another brewery that recognizes there customer base.

its kind of a stoner brewery anyways with home grow-en ale.

Sierra Nevada wants the right of self determination for it's own brewing company, but not for human bodies.

They name "outside interests," which their consortium is not beholden to, but they leave the destiny of the individual to his fellow voters, strangers, none of whom he would share a beer with.

Thank You

Though I rarely drink it anymore, SNPA is my favorite beer... especially when I've been dry for a long time, it's hoppiness makes up for the lack'o'buds in life.

I knew I loved their beer for a reason. And here I am just thinking it was the flavor alone.

Seeing this article has made me (a pot smoker) decide to go get me some sierra nevada tonight. See proper marketing does work. if only we could get frito lays to back it up as well. Beer, bud, and munchies!!

I think some of you may be reading too much into Sierra Nevada's statement. Nobody likes someone to put words in their mouth, and they were merely clarifying their stance on Prop 19. Their stance is that they have no stance on this, or anything else for that matter. It is not much different than any other individual, business, or organization that has no opinion one way or the other on any given political issue.

Better to be neutral than to be negative on an important issue like this.

Weren't a lot of you pissed at the California Democratic Party for remaining neutral on 19? And now everyone's super excited that Sierra Nevada claimed the same position.

I mean, the context is obviously different, but I think it's worth noting.
