if Shit hits the fan...
    #13240714 - 09/24/10 01:43 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

How prepared are you? If you need to survive in the wild, can you? Do you have the supplies, know-how and knowledge? What about arms? Do you have a gun, can you operate it proficiently, take it apart?
What would you do?
Could you trust random strangers? The might seem nice enough at first, but in the end, theyre trying to survive just like you, and may do the same things/more extreme things to you that you may do to others.
Should you form groups or go it alone with the few people you're close to?
I have a .22 cal pistol with 2 magazines and a few hundred rounds of ammo... nothing to write home about. I'll have a much more powerful rifle in my possession in 2 weeks or so.
My parents have plenty of outdoors survival equipment, but if i wanted/needed any of it, theyre a half hour drive away..
Lived in a harsh mountain climate for all my life, so I'm somewhat familiar with surviving in the forest, knowing how to live in the winter, etc.
you?

Depends what climates we are talking about here. Tropical, desert, grasslands,Iceland etc. Some are obviously easier to survive in than others.

Ive lived in a tropical climate all my life so obviously for me surviving there would be of much ease. I think I would prefer to have just one other person with me. Not too many than it becomes chaos.

If shit hits the fan it'll be complete chaos. People will be murdering each other over a can beans, and eating coyote nuts just to get by.

Personally, I'd rather just turn cannibal. I mean, it sounds like an awful thing to ever imagine, but so is fighting to the death over some flame grilled sewer rat. So who's going to judge me for eating a guy? Definitely not the guy I'm eating. He'll be dead.

Shit already has hit the fan in my county, so I'm living it.  However, deer, turkey, elk, moose, bear, etc., outnumber people by at least 100 to 1, which is exactly why we moved here.  It's a remote area, so the militias in the early days of chaos will have no incentive to use their precious gas to come here to rob us.  The Mrs and I raise our own vegetables, grains, beef, and mushrooms, and trade with our immediate neighbors for what we don't grow ourselves such as eggs and cheese.

We use solar cells for power, have a 400' deep well for water, and a septic tank for our waste.  It's been over a month since I made the one hour trip to the nearest grocery store, and it's been over six months since I've had to stop at a red light.

Face it, the world is at least 90% overpopulated.  If shit hits the fan, it will simply be a case of the earth flushing its toilet, something which has happened hundreds of times before.  The fit will survive, and the rest will die off.

Internet access can realistically be attained anywhere you really have a view of the sky... They're called satellites.
Heard of HughesNet? Lol. Who knows if they're still in business, but the concept is still easily executed.

I think what you're doing, rabbit, is awesome...

I could. I had this thought recently while tripping. We are seeing our own demise. I could easily revert to primal instincts, even though i dont know them. The hardest part of adjusting would be the hunting and dressing of animals, just something i've never done.

Those who'd be determined would learn fast. I haven't done it either, but in a case of survival, it wouldn't be too hard.

Good point. I think most people underestimate the difficulty of surviving in the wilderness. ^ RogerRabbit has the right idea. You need to prepare extensively beforehand if you intend on surviving a global catastrophe. It takes a lot more than just good survival skills.

Satellite.

That and the solar cells, etc., all cost money though.  We moved to the mountains after working in the so-called 'real world' for 35 years to save enough to buy property out here and get set up.  I wouldn't trade this life for the other again, no matter what.  We spend weeks cutting, splitting and stacking our firewood, and we spend weeks hunting for our food/meat, but when winter comes, we have it all frozen solid in cold boxes outside, therefore no electricity usage for our freezers.  Our total monthly expenses are about $400, which we can make easily.

That is fucking awesome man, I am studying solar energy in college right now

As for survival, I am in the desert so it would be a bit more challenging for me, but I would probably try to get myself to the mountainous part of the state. I have a tent, backpack, waterpack, and other essentials but I could definitely use some more gear. Really would like a new, 1 man backpacking tent. The one I have no is a 2 pole, 4 person and is pretty bulky

A nice knife is a must

That's actually the easiest part. You have to figure out how to survive exposure. I can make a trap in the shallows of a lake with twigs and rocks to collect small fish. Food is easy. There's shit all around you to eat. Surviving exposure and locating a sustainable water source will be the biggest challenges.

My guess is, if gutting an animal is going to be the most challenging for you, you'll be the first to go. RIP Saltine.

I was thinking about this topic the other day and I tried to find my SAS survival book. It was really good but I can't find it now:crankey: im pissed. I downloaded the PDF, and my printer has no ink. Really useful!

But really a book or watching survival shows won't help much.. you need much practical experience to have a shot, and you'd need to be familiar with your local environment. Like, actually getting out ther and doin thangs

Say you have a nice permaculture spread in the NC mountains.  You have thirty people armed to the teeth, food production capabilities (chickens, gardens, etc...) grow weed and "still" moonshine to barter with, everyone has two jobs (medic, midwife, mechanic, farmer, logistics, school teacher. . .).  I still think you're fucked when some roving band of Crips from Atlanta comes up to see what they can get.  Or your situation gets laid seige by some right wing militia group who wants to get your resources. The only weapon you could really have is pure LSD.  Invite the militia in, invite the crips in, pretend that what you have is theirs.  Then dose them using food and water or moonshine until they are almost comatose.  Then you murder them and stick their heads on pikes outside your perimeter.  I've thought about it and there is no other way.

lol, man..

I think there are some errors to your idea..

This old dude that stayed with me for a few days this summer told me some very effective means of protectiong a perimemter, that emplo like methods as you described.. However, never did it involve breaking bread with the people.. Lol.

If shit hits the fan, I think the key to safety is to either, truly be armed to the teeth and have a commune type area, with a pretty secure perimiter that would hold up well enough under siege for a while..

I mean, if shit reallly does hit the fan. Then your going to have to take it seriously. It all depends on if and how many people are in your 'clan' or w/e.. and what ur environment is like, ad what the conditions are like in the rest of the world...

One of those Vietnam Vet growers who know how to booby trap their fields I presume. . .

Personally, I can't get more than fifty people together.  They are also not the fifty most ideal survivalists.  I assume that 20 of them can't make it to the site due to wimping out, staying with infirm family members, bridges being out, being attacked, etc.

Plausible scenarios include several dirty bombs going off simultaneously (think DC and Atlanta or Boston and NYC for example), an epidemic-scale influenza outbreak with a large-scale power grid failure, or a hurricane hitting a city higher up on the eastern seaboard due to climate change.

In a serious societal collapse I think bartering and trade networks are key, with groups sharing common mutual interest over hundreds of miles. The Incas, Mayans, Anasasi, Romans and the like had well developed relations and trade partners outside their immediate region.  Who knows, maybe those crips could be allies (you give them weed, they scavange the city for mechanical parts), or that raiding party from the Kentucky militia might see mutual interest in moonshine production.

I feel thinking multi-generationally is important if it really goes down.  I guess that means not murdering innocents right off the bat, but definitely being able to take care of yourself if trading with aggressive parties goes bad.

On a personal level it is important to have skills to bring to the table if you need to join a group.

Of course as Heinlein says: " A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

I'd probably just make my way up to my grandmothers house out in KY. She lives in an area with lots of old farmers and families that have been living on the same property for generations. Good people that know how to work together and take care of each other.
