dea: bring us your drugs
    #13240561 - 09/24/10 01:12 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

DEA: Bring us your drugs Saturday
Bring us your tired, your old, your expired, unused prescription drugs, says the Drug Enforcement Agency.

This Saturday, the DEA wants people around the country to raid their medicine cabinets and bring their unwanted drugs to more than 3,400 collecting sites around the country. Bring us your unused prescription drugs, DEA says

Flushing drugs down the toilet could contaminate the water supply. And tossing them in the trash can make them easy to find for misuse.

The DEA answered CNN.com's questions about its drug collection day:

What is DEA going to do with all these drugs?

The drugs collected will be in the custody of a law enforcement officer until their incineration. The medications will be incinerated according to federal and state environmental guidelines.

If flushing or throwing the drugs away in the trash is not recommended, what is the public suppose to do with them when the DEA isn’t collecting them?

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy’s strategy for combating prescription drug abuse includes increasing the number of take-back programs like this one in 2010, making this service available to more and more communities. DEA is committed to holding controlled substance take-back programs regularly and increasing the number of community partners who participate, thus increasing the number of collection sites throughout the nation.

Take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs. But if a program is not available: Take the meds out of their bottles; Mix them with something unappealing like used kitty litter of coffee grounds; Seal them in a bag or disposable container, and throw that away.

The Take-Back Day event, which is free, takes place Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. People who want to get rid of their prescription medicines can log onto the DEA website to find their local drop-off sites.

This is nothing new.  In my community I've been considered a drop-off site for any unwanted drugs for some time now.

What kind of people, besides old people and idiots would give away their(abuse-able) drugs?

Oh yes, BRILLIANT plan, this is going to totally curb prescription drug abuse, especially in this shitty economy! I mean, who wouldn't want to be a good citizen and give all their drugs to the government instead of selling them to a friend?

Pack up your bags boys, the drug war is officially WON

This is for all the old birth control pills, antibiotics and heart meds too. Not just xanax.

So in that respect it's a great idea, bringing awareness of and a solution to a real problem, unwanted prescription meds.
We give the DEA a hard time, but it's not just our drugs they care about.

Nevertheless, they say it's part of their plan to reduce prescription drug abuse, did you see the quote? It's retarded, prescription drug abuse will not go down even 0.1 percent with this bonehead plan

And I still dont see the real problem here. Obviously, flushing drugs down the toilet is a bad idea, and should be discouraged,  but I dont see whats wrong with tossing unwanted pills in the trash

Oh, sure that's part of their plan.
And I'll say this; much of that type of drug abuse reduction, we'd all agree with too.
Kids, mostly. Looking for anything that might get them high.

Let's face it- adults on this board aren't looking through grandma's drug box.

how is someone to know you have drugs in your trash unless you keep it in the actual bottle and they HAPPEN to be looking for probably other reasons?

mix with some gross stuff, out of the bottle, if you are so worried. Our tax dollars are spent on this nonsense?

Does it get in the groundwater or something? is there any benefit whatsoever to this from any point of view?

I want to read some news about someone dropping off illegal drugs and getting arrested.

Or perhaps use that as an excuse "No officer, I was not going to consume or sell these drugs, I was taking them to the pharmacy to dispose of them as the DEA requested I do so."

I hope noone at all shows up.

Why don't they just organize the pills and give them to pharmacies free.

They could actually help some people out for once.

Would you want somebody's second hand pills?

Maybe the pharm companies plan on reprocessing the material?

Antibiotics are supposed to be taken until they are gone. If you only took half of your prescription, your infection could survive and evolve to be resistant to antibiotics. Other than that I agree with your post.
