Free beer on tap as Bud seeks image boost

Free beer on tap as Bud seeks image boost September 23, 2010 - Reuters
Anheuser-Busch InBev's (ABI.BR) (BUD.N) latest effort to revive its long-ailing Budweiser brand includes free beer at bars across the United States just as consumers are beginning to go out again after a recession-imposed respite.
Anheuser-Busch President Dave Peacock told Reuters on Thursday that the world's largest brewer aims to give free samples of Budweiser to some 500,000 people at trendy U.S. bars and restaurants in coming weeks, with a particular emphasis on people who have never tried the brand.
"That's an issue for us, especially among younger consumers," Peacock said. "It's a brand that in some respects that's taken for granted by some, and we need to make sure that it doesn't get taken for granted."
"When we blind taste-test this product, it often wins," he said, illustrating his hope that once more people taste Budweiser, more people will drink it.
The sampling event comes as sales trends at bars and restaurants are starting to improve slightly for mainstream beer brands, according to syndicated data, Peacock said, but added sales remain challenged.
The company also plans to reallocate most of its media spending to the Budweiser brand.
For one week, about 90 percent of Anheuser-Busch InBev's media spending in the United States will focus on Budweiser, up from the typical 35 to 40 percent.
"We're not shy about the fact that (Budweiser) it's been declining for over 20 years, so we need to stabilize the brand," Peacock said. "Part of that is going to be engaging with newer consumers as they come in, who come in with really fresh eyes and no preconceived notions."
Belgium's InBev acquired St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch in 2008, creating the world's largest brewer with brands including Stella Artois, Beck's and Bud Light.
Anheuser's fierce competition with SABMiller Plc (SAB.L) and Molson Coors Brewing Co (TAP.N) has heated up in the economic downturn as consumers pay more attention to price and value when they shop.
Peacock said Anheuser's sales plans for the upcoming autumn include price increases on some products in some markets, including some on Budweiser and Bud Light.

ha yeah I for one prefer Coors Light over Bud light, but its not terrible..just not as good as other brews. I also love how when ever a company does a "blind taste test" there product always wins somehow hmmm

Gotta agree with this. The major brands all taste pretty similar to me. Great Lakes Brewing Company, now that's where its at.

I'd drink a free Bud.
It'll be better when cannabis suppliers do this and I can smoke a free bud.

Bud tastes great as long as the price is low. Since Bud has been bought out, their prices have increased. I've bought it a lot less because of that. If they raise the price to make it seem like micro brews, their going to fail even more. If they produce the most beer, why can't they stop being greedy and sell it for the lowest price? Don't they know that if they sold it for way less, people would buy it way more!? No longer a St. Louis tradition, I prefer Coors and STL is my even hometown but it's no longer a hometown business.

If Bud was any good in the first place they wouldn't be having this problem. Bud also gives a headache after even 2 or 3 beers, and I'm not someone especially prone to hangovers. American beers are mostly lame, but Bud is one of the worse ones if you ask me. The only way you're going to be able to lure in new consumers is by making them hate themselves without a bud in their hand and I'm sure they'll get that done just fine. But make it taste good? I'll still be breathing.

You mean American adjunct lagers are lame. The American craft beer scene is thriving right now and brews some of the finest ales the planet has ever seen.

Its possible for even a noob to make beer that destroys coors, bud, etc in terms of quality. I have several times at the local micro brewery. Its easy. We had a keger one time with a lager and people kept asking what the brand was cause it was much better than their usual swill.

Why is everyone talking about how exxpensive bud is? Where I live, Budweiser, coors, and miller are generally the same price. And I'd consider them to be about the same quality, just a matter of preference. Sure keystone is cheaper, but it tastes like shit.

I can't stand Budweiser. But, I can drink it if I have to. Not the case with Miller High Life.
America's fine malt liquors often don't get the respect they deserve. If I could be drinking anything right now it would be a bottle of the original G. Heilemen Brewing Company's Crazy Horse 40 oz. malt liquor.

Budweiser is brewed from rice!
It's disgusting and it baffles me why people drink it. The drink is all advertising and no flavour.
In my time i've been fortunate to sample the delights of real ale, Belgian beer, Bavarian wheat beer, fruits & lambics etc. I can't get enough of microbrews!

My problem with counterfeiting and free samples:
I will buy things, if I really like them.
If I don't really like them, I won't bother - not even for free.

These guys sound more like stereotypical drug pushers than any of the people I know. Bud even has the audacity to admit that it tries to addict young people!
