cactus cutting 101 1

lets be honest, cactus are easy, and propagating them are easy (usually). here are the basic things to keep in mind.
*When cutting try not to squish the flesh. knives can be dull as fuck and cuttings turn out fine....i have used my shovel to many a cutting with outdoor cuttings. no issues. as soon as you crush instead of cut, you start getting problems.
*dry speceis liek dry. dont take cuttings when its really humid and wet. keep the cuts dry...
*do not place in strong light. slow species can be put in shade, they wont stretch. fast species maybe some medium light.
*no roots = no water intake (or almost none). cactus are good at storing water, some more than others, but they still loose water. keep them out of hihg heat/light to limit dehydration
*Let cuts dry and heal for 2-30 days depending on species. in general tropical species, less time is needed, super dry species (liek our lovely lophs) maybe a couple weeks or more.
*potting cuts do not need water until they root!
*once again, potting cuts do not need water until they root! few exceptions exist, such as really long time to root and severely dehydrated. mist the skin at night, dont make the soil moist.
Summarize Cut plants by: *slicing with little pressure. cut dont push. *healthy plants are often better. *plants in active growth mode are better, but is not a rule. *rooting hormone is not needed 99.9% of the time...the 0.1% is simply because they are anti-fungal....keep dry, no issues.
keep cuts in: low light comfortable temps (20'sC) dry "feet" = dry soil
Don't: keep cuts in the sun keep cuts wet/moist keep cuts really hot or cold keep cuts on the stairs (important for you, not the plant) rush them and keep peaking once planted
anything more is foreplay.
my standard for most cacti is as follows (in a greenhouse). cut the plants
Place cuts in a seedling plug tray (cut surface in the little hole)
Trays are kept under 50% shade cloth
once calloused well (usually 2 weeks +/- depending on my time), I fill the holes with some kind of soil. depend son species. for columnars i use straight coco coir. for things like lophs i use 100% grit
after 1 month i wiggle them a little to see if they are rooted. if they are i repot to something more useful with more specific soil mix. after 2 weeks water well and continue with normal growing conditions.
if no roots yet, wait a little longer. maybe a slight splash of water if ribs are sinking, and water is showing to be severely lost.
Cuttings are so incredibly easy once you figure out your climate and teh basic idea of things, but i get lots of emails asking why cuttings are not working...almost always it is caring too much and either too much water, heat or light...or a cmbo of those.
pics if interested.

Great thread, nice and informative, straight and to the point, and easy to follow. It's fun and easy taking cuttings, easier depending on the species(most root pretty well, but some can be quite painful to handle and transplant).... and with some species, like the trichocereus macrogonus, you can get a whole load of pups on the mother cacti you are taking the cutting from. It quite surprised me some years ago when one of my macrogonii broke accidentally, and after a bit came back with 5 new pups right below the break.... I had never seen any of my trichocereus or cereus cacti do such a thing.
Thanks for the thread kadakuda.

Nice thread... It'll be good to have something to link to instead of giving the same advice over and over and over and over and over.... and over

HAHA, hence the post...i hear ya. seems a day does not go by without answering at least once how to germ seeds, take cuts and repot stuff.
karode, seriously...that signature is really freaky. shroomery login in time is 2 past too many, and that damn thing dont help none!
youthful, totally agree. i remember back a few years ago trying to cut a 13" thick stenocereus trunk to remove from the peoples house (freebie!). i was using a my wifes really sharp henkle (or some over price finger nail cleaning kitchen knife) to get through it....my friend laughed and came back 20 mins later with a chainsaw and that was that.
there is TLC and then there is dressing up our poodles in sweaters and mittens.

I think they are not too happy, today i pot them after 10 days i leave them to form caluss and they seem dehydrated a lot (maybe because there were 2 cm when i cut them from caespitosse and 10 days was too much for them, i dont really know).

Some dehydration will occur. Keep them a bit cooler maybe.
And perhaps try what kada recommends in the OP
Quote:

A pic would help! I wouldn't mist every night, give a few days space between. And maybe find a space a bit cooler for them too as we approach the height of summer?

Thanks for the quick reply M.Harmless! I will post later today some pics. Unfortunately is hot right now here, 28 C and the sun is pretty intense, i have them in the most cool place, though i could leave them out bat i am afraid i cant protect them from a bit sun out there
p.s. Something irrelevant with the thread, is it bad for my adult peyote 4-5 hours of that intense sun?

If it hasn't sunburnt, then it's not bad I can keep them in full sun all day here once they have acclimated, but the sun where you are will be just a bit more intense! In habitat, they get dappled sunlight, through branches of their shade plants, with some direct sun early and late in the day, depending on the lie of the land. It depends how you would like them to grow, keeping them in more intense light, and holding back water, will get you more hard grown plants, flatter, less plump.
