My pet opossum glowing pink!
    #13233684 - 09/22/10 09:58 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

So my short tailed opossum glows under blacklight, I think it's pretty awesome. His entire body glows bright pink, and his underbelly is crazy bright. This video is really shitty quality and not very bright, but I'll try to get a better one later...

In normal light, his fur has developed a really pinkish hue, very cool.

This was the only tidbit of information i could find on the web...

"Many didelphids show remarkable color changes of the pelage after they are prepared as specimens. These didelphids, along with others, also show fluorescence (often-spectacular) under ultraviolet light. In some opossums at least, the fluorescent materials are apparently inside the hairs rather than merely adhering to them. 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid seems to be in part responsible for this fluorescence, presumably along with other products of tryptophan catabolism."

haha, this is pretty tight. Wonder what "3-hydroxyanthranilic acid" is a result of?

If it became known that opossum hair contained a euphoric psychoactive chemical, I wonder if there would be underground factory farms and black people walking around with them in their pocket.

Yea, it took me forever to find one up here in Canada, but they seem pretty popular in the southern states.

They can make great pets. They have some really strange and cool habits, haha.

Have you seen them in labs or something? They are used as test animals quite frequently.

I think he believes it's a normal ugly white faced opossum, he's unaware
that it's closer to being a mouse in size and kinda cute

It's about the size of a medium/large rat right now. And it probably won't get much bigger...

but ya, cute as hell.

Also some other cool things about these guys:

really soft fur
no odor
no noise
no chewing on everything like rodents
cool diet, eats live adult mice, insects, fruits, cheese, steak, you name it...
litter trains himself, always goes in same corner, never on you
has 50+ sharp teeth, looks like crocodile teeth
has both claws AND fingernails
only marsupial without a pouch
carries around stuff with his tail, which is prehensile
amazing senses for night time hunting
extremely fast, faster than any rodent of the same size that i've seen...
strictly solitary animals

Every time I see a video of a cute animal, I immediately want one as a pet.
