Appropriate Petri dishes?

Thinking hard and serious of picking up some petri dishes and playing with some agar. But got to looking around and then found several types.
Pyrex Polystyrene Borosilicate Disposable/Reusable
Anyone have any insight on what's best for someone experimenting? I did read the post of using the really small jars, and it didn't really interest me. I want to be able to see whats going on inside.

I m a noob agar user and I use disposables from www.hometrainingtools.com with h2o2. Great results so far, u can not start spores on h2o2 agar but you can clone and isolate. bLEEp

Well my first dishes were 100 millimeter pyrex, had 12 of them, huge things! great for photos, Expensive though, and you cry when they break. Only having 12 was very limiting also, you can easily use up 10 dishes trying to clone a dirty wild mushroom or isolate attractive sectors from multispore dishes.
Anyway now I use Polypropylene Petri Dishes, 50mm ID x 12mm.
Kinda small (I wish they were 60mm) but I can clean them and re use them, they don't melt in the PC like most plastic dishes, they are made of the same stuff syringes are made of. On the down side they are not as clear as polystyrene.
Polystyrene dishes come in sleeves of 20 that are sterile, so when you open it you must pour sterile agar into them all and seal them, a bitch to do in a glove box but it can be done. Flow hood is easier.
If I had a choice I'd get 60 mm glass, you can get a case of 12 for $13 will cost more to ship though, find a local supplier and save the shipping, get 2 cases. Also with glass if you only want to pour 5 dishes it's no big deal, cook them with a small jar of agar (you have prepared earlier) and you're good to go.
I don't bother with sectored dishes either, I just put 2 to 4 samples in the dish and either let them fight it out or take what I want before they collide.
Anyway I hope that helps.

Exactly the type of advise I was looking for. High five and thanks.
Other opinions are still welcome too.

I use disposable(polystyrene same thing).
They are cheap, and dont break.
I do all my work in a GB no problem. Though I'm sure a FH is a treat.
I would preffer glass but I just cant afford it.
If you just want to play around get a couple of sleeves of polystyrene dishes and go for it.
I make my own agar too.

I got some of the PP dishes...I think that you sent me the link Peter (thanks).
Thus far I have used the disposable types that RR recommends. They are extremely cool. They arrive sterile, and you can write notes on them with a sharpie if you want to.
When my ship comes in, I will buy glass.
For now, cyanmar.com
Take care,

Search posts using the link at the top of the page and your query. There's been dozens of identical threads where the pros and cons of each type have been gone over and over.
Personally, I prefer the pre-sterilized disposable polystyrene dishes. After pouring, slip them back into the sleeve they arrived in and they'll keep for 4 to 6 weeks, ready for use as needed. RR

Yeah right now Im looking to just play with it. And I am restricted to a GB right now. Would build a FH but Im pretty sure the Landlady wouldn't dig it. Ive looked at the disposable ones, they are definitely affordable. Some of the regular glass ones arent out of my price range either. I like the idea of reusable, but I also like the convience of just throwing the damn thing out if it goes bad. Just trying to make a well informed decision based off of other experiences. Thanks a lot for your feedback. Its appreciated.

Hey RR. I've been crawling all over this site for about a year, and found a lot of info that I needed. Its great! And I love it. I use the search function more than any other feature here. I understand its importance. But sometimes when you search, there are so many results that come back. Its hard to filter through all of the results.
I do understand what you're saying though.
