I'm a self proclaimed Deadhead but I've never been to a show. I was born too late. I've seen The Other Ones, Phil & Friends and Ratdog many times. 80% of the time I'm listening to music, it's Grateful Dead. Can't wait for The Dead's summer tour!

My situation is very similar to that of Kosmic Charlie. Not old enough to have ever seen them live, but I've been to a multitude of Phil and Other Ones shows. The Grateful Dead have influenced my life greatly and their music has brought me things I'd never dream.
Favorite Years: Anything before '78, but I love '74. Favorite Songs: Way way way (one more) way too many...but I put Row Jimmy and Crazy Fingers up there somewhere high.
PS: I think there should be a Steal Your Face icon to select as a post icon...

Do any of you fans feel like you know Jerry well because of the music or is it more of the stage appearances? I fell like this about Tool music. I can feel the emotions of Maynard and the rest of the band and I think I would easily be able to have a conersation with any of them because I understand their philosophy and thoughts. Does anyone have any beliefs that the amount of drug usage has increased this shared mental connection or is it just sober realization?
For me i feel like i know Jerry because on a good night we were Jerry and Jerry was us,ya dig On those special evening's when that energy from above would start to take command of the music and the band became connected to the audience and we all became one being. Just a big ball of love and light. There was no band or audience we were all one. At the core were all the same being. The music would take us there then it would take over. We all melted together There was no higher place to be on earth in the history of man than at a dead show. Thousand's of people all stipped to the core all sharing the same soul, all one with the moment and creation. On a good night it was beyond magic it was a mass reuniting of people to god(or whatever name you call the light we came from and return to). Did drug's influence it, hell yes. Were they required by everyone to witness the magic, nope. LSD helped a great deal, but wasn't the sole cause of it. On a good night the music played the band and there the first ones to admit this. For those of you who don't like the dead and wern't there this probably sound's crazy. For those of you that were there on one of the special night's you know what i'm talking about. "THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT"

As for my favorite years.... that's difficult. 72 and 73 were great years. So was 77. Some of their 80s shows were amazing too. 85 seemed to be a good year. There seems to be a unique tone on Brent's keyboard that he used that year. Check out 6-22-85 at Alpine. An amazing show. My favorite part of set 2 is Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > Drums > Space > Dear Mr. Fantasy
And there are incredible versions of Althea and Cassidy in set one. I highly recommend this show.

when mythologist joseph campbell (masks of god; the power of myth; the hero with a thousand faces, etc...) was taken to a dead show a couple decades a go, he immediately recognized it for what it was - a dionysian religious gathering... really...

On those very special nights Jerry played just for me, he looked right at me and played music that touched my soul and brought tears to my eyes.

Do you guys ever wonder if any of us know each other from those days? You know it's funny, there are so many people whose names I can't even remember now that I loved with all my heart and would have done anything to make their lives better. I truly believe we'll all meet again someday.

I love the dead My mom says I was probably at like 40 shows and have been in the parking lot of more. When I was around 8 I didnt go as much cause the places started to want me to have a ticket. I saw Jerry last time they played Giants stadium on father's day. Wish I was old enough to appreciate it but I was like 13. I've been to shows all around NY/NJ area, Philly, Conn., Buffalo, Albany, Toronto, Maine, Ohio (by Sea World), Virginia, North Carolina, DC, Baltimore. Basically wherever they played that was reachable by my parents. Best show was JGB in New Hampshire I believe. A lot of people were jumping this fence to get in all night
Peace.

there's a good chance that some of us smoked a j or grubbed a cig. danced next to each other or stood in line at the bathroom and talked about what a great set we just saw.
