A stinkhorn with a bright orange stem. Growing in conifer duff.
Smells really bad, somewhat spermatic.
Cactu fried up some of the eggs and we ate them, not bad.
Spores cylindrical, 3.5 – 3.9 × 1.4 – 1.6 micrometers.
Location: Aporo, Michoacan, Mexico [Click for gps coordinates]

Tip of the stinkhorn (spore slime / basidia), 40x

Spores 1 micron divisions

I don't know about the microscopy bit but from the pic I guess it must be a Mutinus sp., possibly Mutinus elegans or Phallus rubicundus?

That's one big stinkhorn. It almost looks fake...foam and plastic. Was the texture similar?

I don't think that is correct.
Quote:
This fascinating stinkhorn is often identified as "Mutinus elegans," but close inspection reveals that Phallus rubicundus has a clearly distinguished, separate head that holds the spore-saturated brown slime; species of Mutinus bear their slime on the upper part of a stem structure that lacks a clearly distinguished head.
I am leaning towards a variation of Mutinus caninus.
Those things must have stank up the place in a half mile radius. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

I thought that especially because of the "cap" in the 4th pic down but I admit I'm being ambitious trying to ID anything for AR, having said which I'm totally open to your corrections.

I have to be honest, I have no educated idea. I tried looking up anything about "bright orange stinkhorns" and almost all hits turned out to be Mutinus caninus.

Awesome, and loved the page you built, as well as the satellite view, was that a ranch nearby or something? On the second pic, is that a fly in front of your index? Must have smelled particularly juicy to attract him while in your hand. and you "ate" the "eggs"?

It is much larger than that species.

Yes the texture was very much like styrofoam.

I put a small bit in Cactu's styrofoam box and I could smell him from 20 feet away for the rest of the day. And when we got back to the cabin we were staying in I kind of regretted putting that bit in there. We ended up saving an egg for microscopy/dna sequencing and ate the rest of the eggs we found.

I did not build the page, its mushroomobserver.org. The satellite view is not showing the map of the gps coordinates of the find, it is showing the location of Aporo, Michoacan, Mexico as I defined it. The following link, which violates hunting forum rule # 7 is much more accurate: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=es&geocode=&q=19.666709,-100.36944&sll=19.666709,-100.36944
The eggs are ok to eat because the mushroom does not start to smell bad until it is mature.

That is amazing! I have never seen a stinkhorn that size?!? We get the tiny little guys in my neck of the woods. I never thought to eat them (the egg as you mentioned?) Cool find!

It was not my idea, but once it was fried up I tried it. Did not detect any foul odor or flavor in the cooked egg.
This is proving hard to ID, no one on facebook, shroomery, mycotopia, or mushroomobserver knows what it is. Clearly a Phallus sp. though. I will sequence it when I get back and see how it compares to the other stinkhorns in Genbank.

well i would say yes! tht first pic in that link looks exactly like yours. the habitat was sobre humus en el bosque de coniferas , i see pine needles. so Phallus hadrianii i say is a pretty damb good match.
i showed your pic to my girl friend and she says" so why the hell dont you bring one of those home for me!!"

I can send you some spores, stinkhorns are easy to cultivate.
