new backpack
    #13222228 - 09/20/10 02:32 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

im looking for a new backpack. its not going to really be used for outdoors/camping too often. mostly carrying books and computer back and forth to class and occasionally trips through the airport.

i was debating between a medium or mini ALICE pack or the newer assault (or MOLLE) pack.

ALICE:

assault/MOLLE:

the MOLLE looks like it would be more comfortable but the ALICE looks like it is more collapsible which would make it easier to carry onto a flight rather than having to check my bag.

id like something fairly light but on the durable side so this is what im thinking..

what would you guys prefer or suggest i go with?

If you are concerned about the plane...

I have one of these and I always bring it carry on: http://outdoorequipment.guidestobuy.com/the-north-face-solaris-40l-backpacking-pack (Solaris 40L)

Check the size requirements of the airline you usually fly.

I just got a Jansport Lamark.

I'm pretty pleased with it.  I bought it to replace my to replace my old Jansport of 7 years or so.  When I bought the new one, I realized Jansport's have a lifetime warranty.  So the old pack is going in for warranty.

I'm hoping they replace it with a bran new one.

they do. i keep sending mine back and they keep sending me new ones. im just tired of shipping it out all the time.

i go through backpacks pretty quickly. when you use it, literally, every day they just wear out

i would assume the military ones are some of the most durable that i could buy.

I like that ALICE pack... I am in great need of a pack myself but with my low funding I just can't justify it.
Nice to know Jansport has a good warranty.

i ended up getting a voodoo tactical level III assault pack.

the ALICE was nice but not the best as far as comfort goes.

the larger assault pack was very very comfortable but a little too big for a carry-on bag at the airport. it wasnt very collapsible either.

the main compartment alone on the pack i got can be as large as 5" deep but with all the cinch points (5-7 depending on how you look at it) i can tighten it up to be very slim if i need it to be.

its big enough to carry 3 fairly large books and my 15" Thinkpad with a lot of room to spare. i should have no problems carrying clothes when im traveling. just big enough for the essentials without being too big.

im not planning on going completely off the grid at all so i dont need to carry MREs or rolls of TP and water purifiers or whatever.. this is plenty for me.

its built like a tank too. really loving it.

i think if i really wanted a good larger bag i would go for an ILBE pack.. those things look awesome but its just overkill for me.
