I was heavily inspired by the book when I first read it. It was like a breath of fresh air to know that someone lived that way, if only for a short amount of time. Made me want to do the same thing at the time, but I think I'd prefer to do some long distance backpacking/packrafting trips rather than dive in headfirst with no exit strategy. I definitely admire the guy's style and balls-out approach though.
I'm not a big fan of the movie though. Not because it veers off from the book or anything, but it made the whole story accessible to idiot second-guessers who really missed the whole point of it. I feel like it turned something that was sacred to me into a commodity for the masses.
Roman Dial has a good take on it: A year after the movie, nobody else has died at Bus 142.

I absolutely loved the movie. It's one of my favorites. As well as the book. It's just so incredible, and inspiring.

QFT. I read the book before the movie came out (I think I was in high school) and it was a real eye opener.
After the rainy season I'm packing up everything I really need in the back of my truck and I'm heading to north thru the PNW. I was going to hitchhike up highway 1 last year with some friends but my plans fell through and I let my family talk me out of it. Not this time though.

I was actually planning to go to Washington. I don't think Im legally allowed to go to Canada (previous violent conviction). Im not planning on living off the land but rather living out of my vehicle/tent anyways. I don't have the skills or the balls to try something like that,... yet. I spent a week with a friend earlier in the spring out in the Sierras and that really showed me how hard it is to live off the land.

Oh, I thought you meant like...Hwy 1 as Route 1...
Which runs from Key West up to Canada along the East coast...
Right on man. I hitched up to maine from missouri this year.
if you ever hitch, don't take too much stuff. one pair of clothes is all you need. a blanket, maybe a tent (tarp + rope works just fine), cooking implements, and maybe a companion.
enjoy your next summer/vacation when you hit the road.
good times are to be had. Although driving you won't meet as many people as if you were the one catching rides. anyway, pick up hitch hikers if they don't weird you out when you stop to talk to them.

I haven't seen the movie but I read the book. Let me say that the first 100 pages of that book I was so inspired by it I couldn't put the book down THEN when it got into details of his family life all I could think about was what a privileged, selfish, fuckstick asshole to do what he did to his family. His family hired private detectives and tried everything to find him because they were worried about him. Not because they were abusive to him but because they cared about him and all he could think was what a bunch of assholes his parents were for trying to give him what they didn't have growing up, namely a great college education. That is what he was rebelling against. He rebelled against his over-privileged childhood. What an asshole. He died never speaking to his parents because of this. He took the graduation money they gave him and burned it to show off how little he cared for society. Yeah what a dickhead.

I'm a huge fan of the book, and the movie even though it botched a couple details. Since I moved up to WA I've done alot more backpacking and wilderness survival excursions.
Props to Bipolarbear though, I've never even looked at it that way before. Albeit I'm still inspired by it, I'm happy to be able to look at it from both sides. That was kinda douchy what he did to his parents

this guy was a complete retard who went out into the wilderness unprepared without even a map. the place he died was no more than a quarter mile from a bridge that would have brought him to water/ranger stations/things that would help him no die, etc. It's kind of a good story and all, I get it, and Sean Penn dramaticized the fuck out of it, so a bunch of retards put him up on a pedestal as some great zealous renegade or the like, but in reality he was just a stupid ass who didn't even think to bring a map. natural selection at it's best.

John Muir comes to mind. Anyone who appreciates living close to nature should read some of his writings. That man was truly a bad ass.

He actually DID have a map. Just another thing that the movie botched. He was pretty close to civilization, but the last known picture of him he had a shoulder injury. And from what we understand he died of starvation based on his gradual decline in Body Mass Index, not from eating poison seeds.
Do some research.

Also, CavemanJohnson, I'm not that far from Camp Muir. 2.5hr drive. 3 hr hike. Then back down. I'm hitting the summit, hopefully, when I get all the gear required for the climb :-)

I liked the book, at first.
I respect that he acted on his call to nature, but I feel like he was very irresponsible on how he went about this. I know he became disillusioned with life, but burning your money then hiking into the Alaskan wilderness with not even the most basic of supplies was dumb.
He didn't have to die. He could have found his calling, and found a way to have an impact on the world that he was disgusted with. But to glamorize a selfish death that caused undue heartache for his family and friends is selfish.
This is basically suicide-by-nature and should be seen as such.
Oh, I didn't see the movie, but I loved the soundtrack.

I agree with the poster above me.
Most people move to Alaska to answer a call to the wild, and Chris could have gone about it in alot better ways.

I doubt he meant to die.
I believe he just did not prepare adequately.
