Pink Oyster problems
    #13164301 - 09/08/10 09:45 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hello,

I have not posted around here much but love this site, it has given me many great ideas although sometimes it can be a bit confusing as to which information is regarded as currently accepted best practice!

Anyway, due to recent economic woes i have found myself with a lot of time and my hands and the bizzare idea to attempt to grow mushrooms for a living here in Ireland.

I have chosen the Pink Oyster, the Golden Oyster and somewhere down the line the Shiitake.

O.K thats some of the background out of the way.

I ordered some syringe cultures from Spore Works a month or so ago, i ordered some kit bags also as i was not very confident on being able to do the substrate at the time. So the substrate they are currently growing on is a bag of sawdust with a bit of grain in them.

I realise that some of my efforts in setup will appear stupid so please try and be kind.

They are growing in this at about 24 deg C. pic1

They are kept at around 95 to 100% RH using a Honeywell ultrasonic. pic2

And I am giving FAE via this rather pathetic setup (desk fan pushing air through a vent that closes when air stops blowing). pic3

I find this one of my biggest issues, having to have the fan on those timers that have a min 15 min on time, so i have it so the head of the fan 'swivels' left to right and therefore only infrequently blows the air in through the hole. So it probably blows air in for half that time - 7 Min's say. I have it set to do this on the begining of the hour and half way through the hour. I realise this setup stinks.

Well after waiting and waiting for full colonisation (about a month total, was around 2 weeks for the grain part of the bag then shaking bag then 2 weeks for sawdust part) I finally cut the slits into the bags and low and behold pink mushrooms started to grow! Well....sort of.

I got about 3 to 4 things that looked like poor but recognisable pink mushrooms, the rest of the stuff just looked a bit like coral, i tried to capture some spores from the mushrooms that grew but it didn't drop any. Then on the begining of the what could be called a second flush a pretty decent looking mushroom formed but this time i wasn't going to rush for spore collection and waited and waited to see what it would do with a bit of black card underneath where it was growing to give me any hint of spore production. Well, it didnt grow spores, it started to grow more coral/baby mushrooms from where the gills were.

I have no idea why it is doing this, i can make a stab...but i have nop real idea, like i would say not enough FAE, wrong substrate to produce a decent amount, poor strain that has mutated through to much cloning. I just don't have enough knowledge. PLEASE please help me.

I realise that i might be making mistakes from start to finish, but i don't want to throw the whole idea in the rubbish bin, i want to attempt to make a living at this but can only do it from very little funding. So try not to lambast me too much >.<

Thankfully i have not wasted all of the culture i received and i bothered to try and make an LC out of them, they all seem to have worked and i have some grain spawn on the go and also have some straw substrate and experimental horse manure and straw substrate currently trying to reach full colonisation.

Once again, thank you for your time and i shall look forward to some great advise.

Welcome tigattack!

And..WOW, you're the only one with a greenhouse in a room, that's WONDERFUL and make you a real bemushroomed

About the P.djamor, first thing you should dunk the block in water, I bet it's quite dried. Second: the coral form is given by a low light and elongation is given from high rate of CO2. About light, it seems good enough because I see a windows, so I cannot firmly say the coral like form is given by the low light..but about elongation, you need a better air exchange. Why do not you close partially the main zip-door of the greenhouse?

After 2 flushes you won't have a lot of mushrooms from the P.djamor, I suggest to make others blocks and put them to fruit.

I really admire your idea and your big greenhouse into your home.

Good luck!
Fabio

I have the same greenhouse on my porch.  One question, why do you have that big long ducting hooked to the humidifier?  Seems like a lot to push through.  Why not just put it inside the greenhouse, maybe with the intake exposed to the outside?

Thank you Free Spore Prints, will try to focus on a better FAE somehow and shall try to keep zip half way up while trying to keep humidity for now :S

Hi MonkeyKnifeFight,

I had the humidifier in the greenhouse for a while and it worked very well on a low setting, but there was a feeling in the back of my head that keeping anything electronic in a 100% RH enviroment wasn't going to last very long. So I decided to take it outside, yes I had to pump up the power a bit more and it needs filling more often, plus that particular pipe screams water trap to me which is likely to give me other kinds of headaches. But these things i can deal with, a new humidifier every couple of months I can't. Well that is my reasoning for it.

Make it so the ducting feeds air in from outside the house instead of from the room and you should see an improvement. Are you growing other spawn in the room?

Or open the window and have that fan by it pulling fresh air into the room or two windows open and the fan blowing outwards.

FYI. If your plans are to grow a bunch of mushrooms in that room I would make a feed line from the hut to the outside to allow the excess spores to make it outside instead of into your house. They will make you and if you have kids "most importantly" sick.

You might kick yourself for this, but on the top of the fan body there is a white button, lift it up and the fan will stop swinging from side to side....

Also hook yourself up a big flouro tube outside the GH (to save the cost of a watertight one) as oysters need lots of light.

The air you are blowing in to the GH needs to exit outside of the room, and there needs to be an inlet to the room, preferably with a bit of filter material over it to keep the flies out. Otherwise if the room is closed off you are just circulating CO2 rich air.

lipa

I have just pink and golden in the FC, i currently have some incubating outside and inside the FC. I realise having some inside is probably not the best idea, i guess the filters could get saturated which wouldn't be good. But like a lot of this, it is try as i go and i thought what the hell i would see what happens if i kept some inside to save a bit of room elsewhere. I need to start making a lot of grain spawn and substrate soon and space is not something i have to much of. Just this room really lol.

The reason why I asked is that if you run your spawn in the same room the Co2 rises dramatically in the room as well.

ah, yeah......

It looks like I have a lot of work to do tomorrow!

Btw, for anyone interested, the greenhouse is on 50mm of insulation, there were issues with moisture building up between the ground sheet and the floor. This seems to have sorted out that problem.

I have made most of the recommended adjustments. Working from my own substrate now instead of the kit and all seems to be going well, so a VERY big thank you to all.
