Puffball ID
    #13215178 - 09/18/10 06:05 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Found these growing in 4-5 different spots all over my yard. I'm thinking lycoperdon perlatum, but wanted to double check, if there are any distiguishing characteristics that define this from other puffballs, if there are similar looking unedible ones etc, etc..

Habitat: On thin layer of alder (maple?) wood chips, soil underneath

Cap: 2.5-4cm diameter, white aging to brown, little black spines

Other information: Solid white interior, "spicy" smell, bit firmer than a marshmallow, pics from the same patch

thanks!

How big do these grow? I've been finding a lot of what I believe to be a Lycoperdon species, but having checked back on them a few times, they don't appear to grow any larger than about two inches in diameter. Maximum.

Pear Shaped Puffballs, they don't get much bigger than a marble, but typically they are better tasting than larger puffballs.

Gah! These are edible? Time for me to add this to the list of stuff I hunt...

--------------------
In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

I would say no, the habitat is wrong. My guess is L. marginatum, which looks similar, but has the right habitat
