Well, here's the result of the oat cake. I don't have a scale to measure their weight but they look very healthy.
1st pic is from March the 1st, then i left home to go visiting my family up north till day 4, so the rest of the pics are 3 days later, they had allready begun to sporulate and also the Rh was damn high that's why the mycelium got all damped, bad timing to leave a pinning cake like that, i know, but family stuff is family stuff. I'm happy with the results of the experiment though.

3 days later,

That's a 18cm X 18cm napkin,

very nice. i can't get over the look of that one cake. would you say you'd rather use oats as your main substrate now? i definately want to try it out. i'd like to try them in a simple casing with just vermiculite...see what happens. nice job dude

Thanks man !
Well yes, why not ? Sometimes it's hard to find BRF where i live and i can get this oat bags from many store shelves. I can't remember what i paid for that bag but i'll try to check it out next time i go shopping. I really liked to watch an healthy rhizo growth like that, add some nice fruits and there you have a nice substitute, so next time i'll be using this oat again.
I would really like to see people trying this substrate and posting results, i bet many of you can do much better !

Same as PF, 1/2 verm, 1/4 oat and 1/4 water. The oat is hydrated with half the water, the other half is to be added to the vermiculite. When both are hydrated, just mix them together slowly.
Btw, i don't see why it shouldn'r work invitro, it's a cake.

I wonder how oats would do "ala lazy mofo"????

I would think it would colonize the the added substrate verry quickly..... BTW... how did the jars colonize???? would you say faster than BRF???

.... peace all....

Mine are organic, no chemicals. I don't know about quaker, you have to check out the ingredients.

They are pretty nutritious. . .
It seems any rolled oats would work. That means Quaker.
Some people that say it's mushy don't have the moisture content correct.

What about oat flour? I understand this would probably slow colonization time, but it may do away with some of the hydration problems.

Anything containing whole oats including all the grain parts would work. That includes flour.

The problem with oats is that:
1) They get gummy if you don't split the moisture between the verm and oats like Maia did. The same mixture as PF may be used.

2) The nutrition isn't the best. Check out a nutrition table of different grains. I don't have the link handy or I would put it here. You might want to mix it with something with higher nitrogen. Rye grain flour and oat flour are an excellent mix balancing nitrogen and protein. If you have a high protein content, spawn mate is an excellent choice to raise yields because it acts on the proteins to convert them to more mushrooms.
Peace
Flat
