Oat flakes cake- Alternative substrate experiment pictorial.
    #1321488 - 02/20/03 06:56 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Well, i've tried oat flakes & verm and i must say i'm impressed so far. The standard procedure is all PF like. The only deviation i make is when mixing the substrate, i mix the verm with half the needed water leaving the rest to hydrate the oat flakes, then mix it slowly all together at the end, so the flakes don't break up and turn muddy.
Btw, i used warm/hot water so the oat flakes could hydrate faster, but it can be done with cold water, takes longer to achieve optimum absorption though.
Some pics of the cake,

One day before the above pics, no flash

The organic oat flakes i used,

This is an excellent choice if you don't find BRF and don't want to go into grain substrates.
I'll post back to report a how it is going. So far, so good, so what ?!

I think you're right about it, i have a bubbler working 24/7 but maybe that's not enough, this terrarium is new, bigger and with a more powerful heater system, so i'm still getting used to it. My hygrometer is broke but i think Rh is near 100%, at least in 5 shots i only take 1 clear shot with my camera, the rest of pics is all blury because of the vapor on the lens, coming out when i open that stuff .

Here are my cakes, they seem to have the same action then yours. I'm not sure about the strain, but if you say yours are amazonian, then mine can be amazonians too.

Shit, didn't manage to put pix so here're the linx

Puerto Rican cubensis also show a very agressive rhizo growth. Nice cakes btw !

Can you say "Merry Christmas OH! OH! OH !"

The cake sitting at right is also amazonian but a bit older (second flush) and made with regular BRF+verm, no rhizos, just mushrooms .
Both are in the same enviroment, why such a difference ?

Maybe the texture of the oats holds moisture better than a tiny speck of flour, or maybe given a larger fuel mass the myc has more energy to jump around from fuel flake to flake vs.fuel speck to speck. or oat being a softer grain its easier to penetrate(but the rice is ground) or maybe I just ran out of guesses. whatever.
Impressive.

still...
... to start that guessing game you'd have to use half the amount(W) and pre-hydrate the brf. even though in a pc its saturated in the end.

Those "rhizos reaching for the sky" look exactly like what happens every time I whip up a batch of Puerto Rican. The mycelium of Puerto Rican is insanely aggressive stuff, but it can be a real pain getting it to actually fruit.

That's exactly the problem i'm having.  All pinning parameters were met but the cake refused to pin, now i got only one pin .
I'll try to think about something else....

The only thing that works for me is to put my terrarium outside every night for about a week. This induces a nocturnal-only temperature drop of about 6 or 7 degrees Celsius.

Even with that, however, sometimes I just couldn't induce fruiting at all. Even with the ones which DID fruit, it worked only for the first flush. So I just ended up putting the fruiting chamber outside every night until the cakes stopped flushing.

Puertos are potent, and the mycelium is just about indestructible, but they are (in my experience) a MAJOR pain to get to fruit. I think they need a bit more domestication before I would try them again.
