Gymnopilus Luteus?
    #13205579 - 09/16/10 05:25 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat: Growing alone(well, with a tiny abort)straight from a fallen rotting tree. Western Pennsylvania.

Gills: Yellow with browning at edges.

Stem: Yellow. Slightly larger at base. Not fragile at all. Roughly 30% of its diameter is hollow.

Cap: Yellow. Mostly smooth, maybe slightly fuzzy/scaly.  About 2.5 inches in diameter.

Spore print color: Rusty orange/brown.

Bruising: Bruises brown when damaged severely.

Has a very bitter taste. Sorry the condition of the mushroom isnt so great. It was growing out of a knothole on a rotting log and it just didnt want to be picked. Also the veil left a nice brown/red ring on the stem, but I removed it accidentally when taking the cap off for printing.

(Found this little guy while hunting )

Don't trust me though, wait for a TI.

looks like a g.luteus to mee bro:super: find!!!
Ive found True BIG LAUGHERS only in two locations and they are GIANT and grow out off the ground near stumps and trees
- g.luteus grow off rotten logs - often fallen sideways( like all fallen logs)
- luteus tend to bruise VERY lightly - you gotta give them just the right kinda bruising and bumping to get the blue-green outta em!
- lutes mostly bruise a reddish maroon brown - but if you cut them VERY rough - with a dull knife - or try beating the caps with a spoon - you may get to see some green-blue bruising - they also bruise very slow if any at all
- some patches tho do just seem wicked potent - and will be greenish from the start of pinning
- but imagin the thick ass vivid yellow fruits - blue on them is more green
- try beating up your cap there a bit and throw it in the fridge overnight
you may get it to show some wicked bruising:thumbup:

looks like yours was also quite wet - which does seem to hinder some of the bruising qualities

Nice finds man - remember that EXACT same log - and this date - YOU CAN NOW FIND THAT PATCH ( TWICE_) a yr - spring and fall
fall fruits are ALWAYS bigger n better tho

Keep lurking around that area and in a week or two - maybe just days - you shud be able to find a TON more - think of how the wind blows and travel westward from that spot - you shud b able to find the mother location:headbanger:

Keep it up man - get some habitat pics too
- your find does have a VERY scaly looking cap - which is not so typical of luteus - but the location you said you found it points to g.luteus for mebro

ps- that newt looks BADASS man:biggrin: been like over 12yrs since ive seen a salamander here in WI

But our luteus are justttt poppin right now too
Good luck - i look forward to more posts on these gyms from ya:thumbup:

Looks like lutes to me. I also have found them on logs fallen down a slope. They were near a river.

I had noticed that the abort was a sickly green/gray color. I dont know if that means anything or not. I definitely intend on checking that area more often. Will keep you updated.

Definitely a Gymnopilus. Maybe luteus. S'more/better pics might help narrow it down better.

well its condition was getting rather poor, so it is currently being dried. what are some factors that would point to which type of gymnopilus it would be? i may not have the pictures but i do remember how it looked when i picked it. i am relieved to hear that everyone thinks its a gym. though, because for a while i thought it might have been some sort of pholiota or maybe tricholomopsis sulfureoides(which was ruled out after i took the spore print).

i will be re-uploading more of my old pics shortly - -- but here is a lil peek at some 2010 fall WI g.luteus pins:headbanger: they are kinda late here as conditions this fall have been kinda weird - super soggy - but looks like the luteus will be raging in no time:biggrin:

Is there any doubt from anyone that this is at least some form of Gymnopilus?
