Shitty man, been with mine almost a year.

I never slept well since I was small anyways. I've always had a fucked up sleep schedule. I missed a load of school because of it.

I used damions coir tek with poo. worked a treat. so hoe now I'm stoked with that.

I'm thinking about a small scale pastuerizer atm.

Ya I saw that post with the cooler-steamer setup, cool shit.

Right now I just load everything into a heavy duty black trash bag,
tie off the top and stick a thermometer in the top,
and stick it in the pot to my pressure cooker with jar rings all around it.
Basically turn my PC into a bigass hot water bath.
Weigh the bag down with 2 dinner plates pinning it in kind of diagonally like so you can still see the thermometer.

Hope that made sense.. lol

Actually, all you need to do is go to the auto store and pick up 10 feet of 1/4 inch fuel  line hose, and hook it up to the rubbermaid tote and the pc. I saw that RR recomended  somewhere, maybe even in that thread. I have done it this way for about 400 lbs of sud over the past year. hasn't failed me yet

HaHa, it does...very well, well actually, i would take the money you were going to spend on the wagner, and get a huge  cooler.

I put blankets over mine to get the temp up quicker, then I take enough off once I get there to keep it constant.

A cooler with a vent modded into it, now thats the ticket.

The very first picture at the top of the 55 gallon drum sterilizer page on my site shows the pasteurization 55 gallon barrel right next to the boiler.  The boiler is on the left, and the pasteurization drum for straw is on the right.  All I need to do is slide the propane burner from the boiler to the pasteurization drum.  At some point I'll probably get another burner so I can do both at once, but for now, I either sterilize with steam or pasteurize with water.

If you have the money and space:

Quote:

Danstice once said:
How about an immersion water heater?

I thought about making a pasteurization tub out of a horse or cattle trough that was well insulated and had an adjustable heater installed. I planned on installing an immersion heater from an old electric water heater. Then install some sort of pump to slightly agitate the water for even heating of the entire trough. It depends on the size of the trough, but I'm sure you could pasteurize a lot of substrate quickly using something like this.

or maybe something like this would be useful? :

http://www.coleparmer.com/catalog/product_view.asp?sku=0304600

really any shallow container that could withstand heat and be made somewhat insulated would work. I just say that I'd use a cattle trough because it would be easy to get around here.

Does that help?

I use that setup all winter when it's -35C. It's dropping below -5C here every night for the last two weeks.  I'm running the sterilizer every day, and the pasteurizer once or twice a week after the sterilizer gets shut off.  I doubt seriously that your winters are more severe than ours, since I've been to your city during January-March many times.  I worked several winters on oil drilling rigs north of there, as a matter of fact.

If you want something small scale for indoors, simply use a large pot or PC and pasteurize in jars or bags as shown in the casing prep or manure prep video on my site.  I thought you were wanting something bigger.

My dog is named ozzy, lbs....pounds...hmmm I think you need a bigger cooker if your ramping up production..I dont think a cooker that small would get it up to heat, plus i use like 3 gallons of water so i dont have to refill it. maybe though, can u get 3 gallons of water in it?
also you can get whatever hose  that corresponds with your pc and change the fitting to the tote to match.

If you want medium scale pasteurization set up you can use multiple counter top roasters with spawn bags. You can set them up through out your house and fit 4 bags of poo per so you should go with 4 units. That will give you 16 bags a day per run. 1 run = 4 tubs per day. 2 runs = 8 tubs.

A slow cooker is like a crock pot and a countertop roaster is like a turkey roaster. The later is much larger.

Actually, all you need to do is go to the auto store and pick up 10 feet of 1/4 inch fuel  line hose, and hook it up to the rubbermaid tote and the pc. I saw that RR recomended  somewhere, maybe even in that thread. I have done it this way for about 400 lbs of sud over the past year. hasn't failed me yet

that is the coolest idea ever!

do you have a close up shot of the hose?

do you have to mod it to fit the PC nicely?

would a cooler get to hot using this method?

I'm sure you could get a slow cooker that was the same size as a Countertop roaster....

They are usually made w/ ceramic beds though and considerably more expensive
that their counter (no pun intended) part!

I've never seen a slow cooker with a temperature dial. They operate at a fixed temp i'm pretty sure. dunno what the temp is.

Actually the hose is 3/16th for the presto 23

A cooler might get to hot without the vent modded into it. I'm going to make  one next week so wee'll see.
The rubbermade tote works great with blankets to insulate it though.
I dont use ant clamps to holds the hose on to the pc., it just fits on there.
On the tote side I use a barbed fitting found at hd.

Ill post that pic in a sec

That is a very good idea!

Inexpensive, easy and should work amazing with a BIG cooler too.

Been doing it for years.  I've got a much larger setup now, but for indoor use, that works great for small amounts.

Right on RR, you were the time saving inspiration for me so thanks, I did have a question for you though.
Is the dispersal wand at the bottom necessary or can the tubing just be fitted to the tote with the same results?
I ask becase the tubing always deforms a little even with cpvc, and before making another out of copper I'd like to know if I'm wastin my time.

^ ^ ^ Good question! I'd like to know too.

I was thinking of using copper tubing with the end crimped and a bunch of little holes drilled in the tube as a 'dispersal wand'.

I imagine a dispersal wand would be ideal, but critical?

Wow thanks for the ratings everyone.....maybe I'll make a formal tec (it would be my first) with a modded cooler if so many have missed that info. But really I take no credit for it, as RR said, it's been done before. I've used live steam in some of my furniture pieces to bend wood, but when i saw his post a little bulb went on in my head....lol

This thing works decent.
But doesn't hold a candle to the pc + tubing idea. I wish I'd read that sooner. It's such an elegant solution.

Loving where this is going. I like the pc with a tube and a tub idea. Most of us have everything but the tubing laying around.

I'm curios about the wand too.

I don't really see a need for the wand.  If the straw is loose, the steam should penetrate all over the basket.  You can easily tell by sticking your thermometer in various places.

Beat me to it....excellent post!  5 Shrooms.

I also wonder whether you just yank the hose off the PC
when it gets to temp (I am sure that this is a low pressure
operation) ?? ...and then put it back on once in a while?

Thanks for sharing!

JD

P.S. The roaster idea is provocative too.

I never put the wieght on, I just start boiling and watch the meat therm....
the pc pressurizes to like 3 or 4 lbs.
Thanks for the heads up on the wand RR.
Also I have not used straw yet as a subtrate, I use something similar to  damiens coir teck, but i add other things sometimes that need to be pasturized to the hilt. I also use 3mil trash bags, as it makes it easy to just tumble my spawn in and pour out into my monos.
Thanks for the shrooms JD....
