Who here has experience on a sit down fork lift?

I have an interview tomorrow that will be for a forklift driving position and I only have a little bit of experience on a sit down forklift. Most of my experience is on the stand up type. Could you breifly refresh my memory on how to operate one? I am sure they'll re-train me, but I don't want to be completely ignorant.

dude, you could really consolidate this all to one post. I get that you really want to prepare, but to spam the pub with every aspect of your day tomorrow is unnecessary. I wonder what toothpaste you should use?
PS: forklift: left foot goes forward, right foot goes backward, or is it the other way around? The levers have demonstrational pictures. just drove one the other day. Cars are far more complicated. so if you are 16+ it should be cake.

My friend was operating a fork lift once and dropped a shit load of eggs.
I think that would be really funny to see.

very easy to operate but it takes practice to maneuver it the proper way and you will get better with time at stacking pallets etc

rear wheels turn and the levers also have a left and right shift in most cases

not all lifts are like that, the majority have a lever on the steering column that provides forward, neutral and reverse, the two pedals are acceleration and braking

It's not that hard to learn a different type of forklift if you already know how to run one type. You'll have the hang of it within an hour without any training needed.

Also, I wouldn't get overboard with it when you are getting certified, but if you keep the clutch in and push the gas while you are lifting something it will go up faster. Big time saver!!

a shop I worke at, I cut down the mast of a huge forklift so we could get it in the building and use it, went from 15' to 10' overall height, we had a breezeway between 2 of the buildings that was 9' and had the steam and sprinkler pipes running overhead, we had 3 people bust those pipes with the big lift and one bust them with a smaller lift
every time was the same, it was vacuum system, when the seal on the pipe was broken anywhere you'd hear this deafening rush of air that drowned out the cries for help, leaving the operator clueless and helpless, it usually took a full minute for the water to arrive and when it did it was about 100 gallons a minute through the 4" pipes virtually drowning everyone in that area, namely the lift driver and anyone that went to help him and flooding the floor of both buildings, that sucked in the winter
I put a $30k thermal printer into a hall with a forklift once, it had to go through a wall to get there, I also discovered that the only person there that had certification had never been on a forklift before, he was afraid to get on one

I wish you had video of that as well. I had a guy break the sprinkler system at a warehouse I was supervising at the time, but it was on the wall and not nearly as big a deal. ( I think it was just a relief line to flush the system.) You wouldn't have known that by the way the guy was flailing around and screaming for someone to do something though. Forklifts are great.

Yeah, that is fun, but dangerous as hell. When it would rain, the water would get down on the dock plate and when we would back out after loading, we would do doughnuts. or make a long strip of water on the floor, go real fast, then once we hit the water we would slam it in reverse and gun it to see how far it would go. Almost put a few holes in the wall that way, and almost dropped it off a small cliff outside of one if the doors on the unfinished side of the building. Thinking back on it, I am astonished that someone didn't get hurt really bad, or killed.

shit, tat reminded me of one of the guys we had, he's racing around on one of the medium lifts with large fork carrying pallets of unbanded steel pipe supports, several people told him to slow it down, he just kept getting faster and dumber, he eventually put the forks through one of the windows in the boss' office trying to put a pallet on the rack, nearly clipped the old man... oddly, it was still another month before he got fired

Admittedly I've done some dumb shit, but racing around with unbanded steal is like racing around with a blank death certificate on the forks.
I like this thread, it brings back all kinds of good memories.

from the wide variety of answers you've gotten, i'm sure you have realized that there are many different types of sit down lifts.
they are like driving a car, really intuitive for the most part.
besides that -- every place you work requires separate certifications for lifts, so they legally have to teach you the operation of every piece of equipment they expect you to use
-------------------- PM me reading suggestions, I might just take you up on your offer.

I just had to teach the foreman for our drywall contractor how to operate an all-terrain forklift today since his lift operator is on another job. He was nervous as hell, but was able to use it all day with no problem. All-terrain forklifts are the hardest to use, so if I can teach someone how to use them, any other type should be no problem to learn unless you're lacking in common sense.

Those are my favorite. Any forklift with tractor tires is fun.

ahhhh forklifts! memmories memories and more memories.. there pretty self explanitory. Gas pedal, break pedal, forward reverse lever right by the steering wheel. then a few levers one for lifting the forks up and down one for tilting the forks forward or back one for sliding the forks left to right. some have a lever to open and close the forks, otherwise you gotta hop off and adjust them yourself. When u hop on use 3 points of contact at all times and buckle ur belt just to look like u care.

i HATE wearing my belt at work, but they chew my ass if/when i dont. Some of the better advice i've gotten is to always keep your control hand moving. The position of your forks can always be better. Course that was in a fast paced and tight quarters area.
I currently bring in units of lumber and drywall into a home warehouse. I really dislike unloading 4000+ pound units of 12 foot long drywall, very unnerving.. one slip up and hello drug test.
This place also has those stand up reach trucks that extend out. So weird at first. Another strange one they have is just the same as a reach truck except meant for 4000-6000pound lifts.. plus it will crab walk left and right. pretty cool
