Not paying large fines for crimes
    #13198591 - 09/15/10 10:29 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

What happens if someone doesn't pay thier $10,000 in fines that the court gave them for crimes.  Does the court send them to jail?  What if the person isn't working and has no income?  If a person owes, can they still collect food stamps?  Will the judge reduce the fines over time?

If it's in your conditions to pay and you don't pay your violating and can be sent to jail.

Most places send you to jail and count each day in jail as a certain amount of money, usually around $30.  So you have to stay in jail quite awhile to pay off a little fine.

If you have no job and no money it would be a good idea to schedule a court date and ask the judge to reduce the fine or give you a payment schedule.

So if a person has no job and no income, then they are better off just going to jail, getting fed in jail, and reading the news paper?  Seems to me like it's the tax-payers that have to pay.

Pretty much.

Then again they do charge you for every day in jail. If I had a $10,000 bill and I could get rid of it through 30 days I would. Of course, if I had no job or home of my own.

I got lucky myself through court errors and shit. Probably paid 200 bucks on around $10,000-$15,000 fine. A judge released me from probation on a DUI that happened right at the end of my probation but court was after the end date for it, court probation started. I went to the hospital and never knew I had a DUI. Then I moved out of state and never had to deal with the DUI. The state law said I had to go to their state to do the classes. Long story short I filled out a piece of paper and it was gone(after hours on the phone with the DMV for many days), hard to take classes in a state you don't live in then got my license in another state. I think that has changed now but I slipped through.

I feel lucky, Oh yeah I probably peed for my P.O. 6 times in 5 years. I was bad. Of course I did spend about 1 year in jail over three different charges.
