G-Dead is WAY overrated, IMHO.

I like "Sugar Magnolia" & "Tons of Steel", they're okay.

Bustin' Ripple's balls is Kykeon's job, but I like it too!

eh, well it's about more than their music which, i'll agree, is mediocre.

there's a lot of culture and history surrounding them, not to mention a large, international community.

have you ever read the electric kool-aid acid test? it might change your mind a bit if you haven't.

Never quit a job.
First show at Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, New Jersey, summer of '72.
Saw them between 50 and 60 times, sometimes in small theatres like Passaic, New Jersey's Capitol Theatre.
I used to hang out at college with a roadie named Sunshine, who used to go out with a friend of mine who went there (she currently works full time for the Grateful Dead organization, and I contacted her recently for the first time in 28 years!!). He liked to dose people. There's a photo of him with Jerry on the back of a pickup truck in 'The Grateful Dead Family Album,' page 121.

# of shows got into: 6
# of jobs quit: 1
# of grilled cheese sold.... 1000's
Favorite years: 65-72
Most recent 'played out' cd jerry live at oregon state prison 1982 solo acoustic.

never had the privlage to attend a real show, but first saw phil & dylan in irvine. Followed for 3 days within 200 mile radius. only seen 'the other one's" one time, the rest were phil. Why dont we have more west coast activity?

no one seems to remember pigpen anymore... a shame really cause the dead seems to have taken a major curve in thier music since his death. Not that it was a bad change, but something to be reconized. Guess it happend every time a member died.

Markos,

Never did see the dead at Roosevelt Stadium, however I did see some great shows there and as for the Capitol Theatre in Passaic what a great venue that was, I must have seen 20-30 shows there between the GD and JGB.

I love the Grateful dead
I was in junior high when Jerry died, I had only been into there music for a year up to then.
The dead changed my life.
I seem to listen to them most when im really happy or when im really sad
My friend and me were dead heads at 12 and 13.
We would wander round the country side in GD tyi-dies and wholy jeans.
Our old hippy friends would laugh at us and give us music and drugs
We were ok.
I remember the country-side when we would take out the pickup and go to the river
blarin-out the dead and occasionally other bands.
There was something about those days.
I felt like I knew Jerry, I still do.

I sure do envy you guys who gotta experiece a show though, but we were ok

Do any of you fans feel like you know Jerry well because of the music or is it more of the stage appearances? I fell like this about Tool music. I can feel the emotions of Maynard and the rest of the band and I think I would easily be able to have a conersation with any of them because I understand their philosophy and thoughts. Does anyone have any beliefs that the amount of drug usage has increased this shared mental connection or is it just sober realization?

I'm a self proclaimed Deadhead but I've never been to a show.  I was born too late.  I've seen The Other Ones, Phil & Friends and Ratdog many times.  80% of the time I'm listening to music, it's Grateful Dead.  Can't wait for The Dead's summer tour!

My situation is very similar to that of Kosmic Charlie. Not old enough to have ever seen them live, but I've been to a multitude of Phil and Other Ones shows. The Grateful Dead have influenced my life greatly and their music has brought me things I'd never dream.

Favorite Years: Anything before '78, but I love '74.
Favorite Songs: Way way way (one more) way too many...but I put Row Jimmy and Crazy Fingers up there somewhere high.

PS: I think there should be a Steal Your Face icon to select as a post icon...

For me i feel like i know Jerry because on a good night we were Jerry and Jerry was us,ya dig  On those special evening's when that energy from above would start to take command of the music and the band became connected to the audience and we all became one being. Just a big ball of love and light. There was no band or audience we were all one. At the core were all the same being. The music would take us there then it would take over. We all melted together
There was no higher place to be on earth in the history of man than at a dead show. Thousand's of people all stipped to the core all sharing the same soul, all one with the moment and creation. On a good night it was beyond magic it was a mass reuniting of people to god(or whatever name you call the light we came from and return to). Did drug's influence it, hell yes. Were they required by everyone to witness the magic, nope. LSD helped a great deal, but wasn't the sole cause of it.
On a good night the music played the band and there the first ones to admit this.
For those of you who don't like the dead and wern't there this probably sound's crazy. For those of you that were there on one of the special night's you know what i'm talking about.
"THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT"

As for my favorite years.... that's difficult. 72 and 73 were great years. So was 77. Some of their 80s shows were amazing too. 85 seemed to be a good year. There seems to be a unique tone on Brent's keyboard that he used that year. Check out 6-22-85 at Alpine. An amazing show. My favorite part of set 2 is Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > Drums > Space > Dear Mr. Fantasy

And there are incredible versions of Althea and Cassidy in set one. I highly recommend this show.

when mythologist joseph campbell (masks of god; the power of myth; the hero with a thousand faces, etc...) was taken to a dead show a couple decades a go, he immediately recognized it for what it was - a dionysian religious gathering...

Do you guys ever wonder if any of us know each other from those days? You know it's funny, there are so many people whose names I can't even remember now that I loved with all my heart and would have done anything to make their lives better. I truly believe we'll all meet again someday.

I saw the dead in Eugene and Portland
I make a trip out west every year for the Oregon county fair it would be nice if they are playing around that time out west. West coast show's rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not too sure about that, Madison Square Garden is a special venue for the band and so was the Specturm in Phlly & The College of William and Mary in Va. The Capitol in NJ, The Calderone, War Memorial and so on!

I love the dead   My mom says I was probably at like 40 shows and have been in the parking lot of more. When I was around 8 I didnt go as much cause the places started to want me to have a ticket. I saw Jerry last time they played Giants stadium on father's day.   Wish I was old enough to appreciate it but I was like 13. I've been to shows all around NY/NJ area, Philly, Conn., Buffalo, Albany, Toronto, Maine, Ohio (by Sea World), Virginia, North Carolina, DC, Baltimore. Basically wherever they played that was reachable by my parents. Best show was JGB in New Hampshire I believe. A lot of people were jumping this fence to get in all night  :smirk:

Peace.

there's a good chance that some of us smoked a j or grubbed a cig. danced next to each other or stood in line at the bathroom and talked about what a great set we just saw.

Some of the most intense show's i saw were at the Garden. Boston and Madison square :grin:The Spectrum in Philly is the first place I saw them and was were I got to see them bust out Unbroken Chain(unbelievable night). I'm not saying east coast shows arn't great it's just out west there's so much more family at the show's. See'ing the Dead in the bay area is so special since it's were they started. Alot of the older family only would go to west coast show's(at least in the period i toured). There presence made a big difference in the vibe. East coast tour's and west coast tour's were different. West coast was alot more mellow ,free and open and east coast was like a "the circus is in town" attitude ,full of crazy energy. They both have there strengths, but nothing beat's Jerry in the bay area(except mabey Red Rocks )
Either way i'd give anything and go anywere to spend one more night with him.
Hell i'd go see him at the south pole in my underwear if i had the chance to see him again
Almost 8 years gone and i miss him every day and i always will

BTW those of you that got to see the dead in 78 or before can't imagine my envy
you lucky fucker's

although i've never been to an 'official' dead show, I often end up there when i'm tripping. It's usualy pretty dark, Jerry's there, Thier playing (nothing in particular)and thier is no greater feeling in the world. usualy at night trips when i'm in my bed and i have my eye's closed and everything is really intence. The euphoric feelings are overwhelming. If i were to die, that's where my heaven would be.

never having seen them on the west coast I was never exposed to that, but i can understand, I would have loved to see the JGB at the Warfield or the boys playing Red Rocks. I've seen them in 10 east coast states and the family element for us was that we got to see the same friends year in and year out all up and down the coast.

JGB at the Warfield was like heaven. Such a small intimate place
Even though you didn't make it out west you got to see them in there peak year's.
Didn't i read in a thread you were at the Englishtown show? Jesus Christ how awesome was that!!!!!!!!! West coast or east coast the seventie's were the most cosistently incredible year's musically for the boy's. I would give absolutaly anything to see em in the 68-78 era. You got the experiance the best of the dead man!!!!!!!!!!they were grease back then. And it was just deadheads and not the million's of idiot's that came just to get wasted that happened after touch came out.
I want a time machine. Go see them at the filmore east or west. HEAVEN

Englishtown was a great experience as was seeing Jerry 10 nights on Broadway, or the 1975-76 JGB shows with Nicky Hopkins. Queens College comes to mind in 1976, they played all night long. In the mid to late 70's my favorite venue was the Capitol theater in NJ.

Lets see what year was the string of shows at Radio City Music Hall...must have been mid 80's. Were you there ChinaCat?

Radio city was before i came on board, but i was at the braodway JGB show's. Only got into 3 of them. First time in NYC :grin:Shit Ripple we probably have seen each other at show's numerous times. I was just thinking about the venue i`ve seen the most show's at and it's got to be MSG. Those 9 show runs add up. I bet i have seen more than 30-40 shows there. We would park in that parking garage next to it and stay there the whole time. Camping in a parking garage in NYC now that's crazy  You know as i was saying west coast shows were better i got to thinking about the music. The music really was spectacular at some of those east coast show's. Especially at MSG. On a good night there it seems that they could really feed off that New York energy. New York's such a high energy city, all those people in that small of space. Damn what a venue!!!!!!!!!!! Boston garden too!!!!!!!!
After all those year's on tour i feel i took it for granet. I thought the Dead would continue forever and even got bored of the touring lifestyle. It wore me out. But damn Ripple i never realized what we had till it was gone. I love Jerry so fuckin much it hurt's. I love my life now, i got a wonderful wife and 3 awesome kids, but i still ache to hear that sound that only comes from Jerry Garcia playing live.
I am very greatful to have had the privelage of being part of it all.
:grin:GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD
