I've always thought of WWII as the one war in which pacifism wasn't the right answer, but I sometimes wonder if even in that case there might have been a peaceful solution that I haven't thought of yet.

Silver ya Pacafism would have worked Im sure. You know the nazis were damn close to exterminating as they called it (I call it genocide) the Jews. Ya it would have been better if we had said "lets sit back and think and maybe we can sign a some more nonaggression pacts." Dude Im sure that would have worked. Get a fucking clue war is just neccessary sometimes.

I'm not saying it necessarily was the answer. I'm just saying I sometimes wonder if there was a different answer that we haven't considered yet. Who knows--maybe war was the only answer, but we can't know for sure.

i think it was a good time to get violent. heh. i really do think that there are definitely times when violence is ok. still... alot of spiritual traditions, and many very wise people, have taught that violence is never ok. i think it is though. it's just action. i think that the unecessary and immoral violence cannot be carried out in anything but a hateful, selfish way. i think that if violence truly is necessary, one should be able to commit it with understanding and compassion.

yo meaty... what's with attacking silversoul like that? he's a kind dude and he was just putting an idea out there. chill out man. don't tell him to "get a fucking clue". from reading your post, i would venture to say that he is far more intelligent than you anyway. go back and READ his post. try not to forget what the beginning said before you get to the end this time. as for you, silversoul... excellent work on not firing back at that imbecile. i just had to though. *as a side note, this post would be an example of un-necessary violence. it was carried out in a state of anger, with no roots in understanding and compassion.*

It is wise to be open to possibilities, the more I learn about previous wars, the more I learn of the many missteps which led countries to the most inglorious of human activities.
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I heard this story one time on republican talk radio. Some dude calls up and he's like:
One time he meets a guy on the street, and they get to talking and otherdude said he was a pacifist. So he punches him in the face, and he was like "stop that." So the dude punches him in the face again, and tells him to fight back, and he won't. So he punches him in the face again and walks away.
I guess the point is, pacifism doesn't work when there are non-pacifists around.

Well, in my mind, pacifism doesn't mean you have to be against defending yourself. It's when you aggressively attack someone else that pacifists draw the line. At least that's how I define it.
