I found growing right at my aparatment complex a big ole panther cap growing. in February ? I am shocked, but happy about it

Amanita pantherina

drow, there are several similar Amanitas to pantherina. You need to verify the appearance of the volva (at least) to be sure.

Sorry about the no pic. And thanx for the heads up on the volva, but I hunt Panthers all the time. If you eat them raw, then they can be concidered toxic. I have eaten then raw and puked, but had a good high. I find that if I cook them good, I don't have the nauseau and have awesome trips.

That makes sense.

From what I've read, Ibotenic acid is thought to be toxic before it is converted to muscimol(the active chemical in A. muscaria/pantherina/a few others). Ibotenic acid is converted to muscimol by the use of heat. Cooking Amantia muscaria/pantherina at around 200 degrees before you eat them is always reccomended. Read the Amanita preparation under the amanita section on the main page.
