It's not like the U.S. government does things like this for no reason.  It's for PR.  The U.S. has a bigger military presence in Africa now than ever before, even in the Cold War. 

The threat of military and economic repercussions would theoretically be enough to cow any African nation into letting us build bases on their soil, but we like to keep a nice translucent veneer on our neo-imperialism, so we give lots of aid, much of which gets skimmed off the top by politicians.

Why is everyone assuming this story is accurate?  From doing a Google search, the only sites carrying this story are right-wing nutjob sites.  The source cited in this thread has a history of being loose with the facts.

It's also relatively interesting scientifically.

It's an exercise in public health education and awareness.  Things we may take for granted in the spread of disease, (such as washing your hands) aren't known elsewhere.  You can effectively test new forms of mass health education.

In a larger context, you could use a similar method to test the effectiveness of new, post-coital HIV interventions. 

This is much more difficult in the U.S. where things like "ethics" might get in the way of assigning someone to a "placebo" HIV intervention.

It's accurate.

The grant and the award are listed in the NIMH database.  It's actually 823k, but over a 3 year period.

Rather than the myth of AIDS in Africa, we should be getting them out of the slum they are in if we do anything.

Yes, they buy more when they don't die. They also can build a real civilization and export more.

Also our image of Africa is fucked, because we only ever see the bad parts. It is too big of a continent with too many separate countries to do that.

In a lot of ways they are better off than India. Or at least no worse.

Get rid of the malnutrition and lack of health care, stop feeding them poisonous antiviral drugs and you will see that they where never dying from AIDS, at least not the kind from the magic HIV virus that "causes AIDS" and instead have been dying from the things they have always been dying from

i am not sure what slim disease is, but i won't sit here and take the time to do an expose on something so abstract that has already been said anyway.

i formulated my opinion based on the information i read, that at first i was skeptical about.  Way too hard to try to put in my own words what doesn't need to be changed. :shrug:

go on youtube and look up AIDS inc and other things. You will find some people trying to refute this, one lady in particular, but she fails to do anything but the same old rhetoric while failing to address the questions asked in any real way.

No idea.  However, in research grants a budget is often submitted.

You might consider that an average lab tech is roughly 30k/year.  So one full time person on the project would be about 90-100k, or an eight of the budget.  A more experience health professional (nurse, doctor etc.) would be more.  Then there might be some type of lab test (blood test etc.).

Then the university will take some off the top for "administrative costs".

Without a protocol though, the above is pure speculation.

"Slim Disease" is what AIDS is called in many parts of Africa by the locals. And they DO see something new, sexually transmitted and lethal ripping through their communities that wasnt there before, in people taking no drugs.

I'm not saying it is or isn't HIV or that the drugs do or don't help, but there is a disease, sexually transmitted, that has people waste away by the millions, fall prey to the most basic infections and die.

There are countries of millions of people with 10, 20, 30% of the population infected. They will ALL be dead before 2020.
Uncertainty over the causes and factors are technicalities, theres a worldwide pandemic going on, and since the 1980s its killed a few friends of mine.
