Marijuana Ballot Measure in California Wins Support of Powerful Union September 13, 2010 - New York Times
LOS ANGELES — A ballot measure to make California the first state to legalize the sale and use of marijuana has won the support of one of the state’s most powerful union, officials said Monday, offering the proposition a shot of mainstream legitimacy as well as a potential financial and organizational lift.
The decision by the executive board of the Service Employees International Union of California will be announced in the next few days, according to officials who have been briefed about it but were not allowed to speak publicly before it was announced.
The measure has faced strong opposition from law enforcement groups, including Sheriff Lee Baca of Los Angeles County, who said he would lead a campaign against it as a threat to public safety.
But the proposal also won support on Monday from some former law enforcement officials, including police officers, judges and prosecutors.
The measure, known as Proposition, 19 would legalize, regulate and tax the sale of marijuana. It has been promoted as a way to raise money for the financially beleaguered state, while dealing a setback to Mexican drug cartels.
The measure is quickly emerging as one of the top — and most contentious — ballot issues in the nation this November. Polls show that it has the support of a slight majority of voters. But political analysts said that this kind of measure, given the social stigma that comes with illicit drug use, could prove difficult to poll.
At the very least, the support by the S.E.I.U., which claims over 700,000 members in the state, could make it easier for other groups to rally around the measure. More practically, it means access to the union’s considerable campaign apparatus, which could finance mailings, telephone calls and leaflets.

Hell yes! This is awesome. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of really big endorsements coming soon.

Yeah, but things never really start happening until after Labor Day anyway so we should expect to see things get way more exciting very quickly.

SEIU has a great get out the vote system. they also do a lot of person to person campaigning. this could be a meaningful endorsement.

If this happens, its going to cause a huge shift in American culture and law. Their is no way a state as large as California legally producing cannabis so openly will not effect other states.

Haha, you're not kidding. Half the people in the Yes On 19 campaign traveled from somewhere else in the country to be here for this.

Not much new info here, but it's been officially confirmed.
Largest union in California endorses pot legalization September 21, 2010 - Salon.com
A ballot measure that would legalize marijuana in California won the support Tuesday of the largest union in the state.
The 700,000-member Service Employees International Union California has 15 locals representing workers in health care, building services and state and local government.
The possibility of members operating phone banks, walking precincts and raising money makes the union a political powerhouse in the state and a strong ally for the Proposition 19 campaign.
However, the endorsement letter from SEIU California president Bill Lloyd left unclear how much time and money the union would provide.
Most union resources will go toward supporting Jerry Brown in the governor's race, Lloyd said, although he vowed members would help Proposition 19 any way they can.
Revenue raised by legalizing marijuana could help the state preserve jobs and avoid cuts to health care, home care, education and other services, he added.
Proposition 19 calls for allowing adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana. Local governments could tax its sales.
The campaign has won the support of several other labor groups, including the Northern California council of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union and Communications Workers of America Local 9415.
The measure also has the endorsement of the NAACP California chapter. President Alice Huffman fought off criticism from religious leaders, saying Proposition 19 would help eliminate law enforcement practices that disproportionally target African Americans.
A group of former law enforcement officers also endorsed the measure, saying it would free up the courts and police to work on more serious crimes.

Boo Arnold ...
Calif gov. blasts union for backing legalized pot September 24, 2010 - Associated Press
LOS ANGELES—Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has blasted California's largest union for supporting a November ballot measure to legalize marijuana.
The governor wrote an opinion piece for Friday's Los Angeles Times, calling it a flawed initiative that would make California a laughingstock, cause legal nightmares and risk public safety.
Schwarzenegger's piece attacks the 700,000-member Service Employees International Union for endorsing the measure.
The SEIU has said the plan could bring tax income to fill empty government coffers.
The governor says the union could do more to save jobs and prevent budget cuts by embracing pension reform.
The SEIU is resisting his reform demands, although a handful of other unions have agreed to pension concessions.

Hope that doesn't mean Arnold could veto the bill or something. That would be bs, especially since he used to toke himself.

He won't be in office. This is a gubernatorial election as well, and he's not running.
