Sterlizing verm and other stuff.
    #1319026 - 02/19/03 10:50 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

i am going to get a casing ready this weekend but I am just waiting for ny Rh meter to get here.. Now i am going to case 2 cakes with 100% bottom layer of verm and 50/50 mix on top. Now when sterlizing the verm how exsactly do i do this? I was thinking putting it in microwave for 5 mins and then letting cool down and proceed.

how are some of you peeps doing it?

You could just moisten the verm then stick it in the microwave for 10 minutes. Then pull it out and stir it and stick it back in for 10 mins (make sure the microwave is clean and sterile). Let it sit and cool in the microwave. When it cools you can remove it from the microwave and rehydrate with a 1/3 peroxide 2/3 water mixture (peroxide is to help keep down contams). The problem with bottom casing layers is that they can contain contamination that could be hard to spot. Just make sure you sterilize it good and you should be fine.

so you dont recomend that i go with a bottom layer? I was told that in TMC it says not to go with a bottom layer. I guess i can skip this process. the shit is that i read "casing for dummies" and they went 100% verm with a bottom layer.

Peace!

Put verm and 50/50 on middle rack in the oven. Then bake for 45 minutes @325. Use distilled water when you moisten dont use tap water. Or so I have heard this is the best way.

I've never sterilized my verm for casings in the past and have had great results and no contams.

Must be doing something wrong I suppose..
