wet birdseed?
    #1318791 - 02/19/03 06:46 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

i began playing around with birdseed a few weeks ago. i used the 6T method. all the jars show growth, some more than others, but it is progressing s l o w l y . could this be from not draining the seed well enough after soaking? there are no signs of contamination.

Do they look wet?and what did you use for air exchange?Too wet
aids bacteria and that will slow things down a lot.Bad air exchange will also slow growth to a standstill.

yes, but there could be other reasons too . temp, air exchange, excessive handling to name a few .
edit:Ganja beat me toit again .

to me it sounds as if it may be one or a combination of things. the first is enough air. how are you jars ventilated? i've had a few problems with this, but it usually isnt a factor until towards the end of colonization. other problems may be not enough or too much water. the method i prefer is this:

-rinse seed thoroughly (i use penningtos- it has this shit called bird kote)
-soak 12-24 hrs
-simmer approx 20 min or until seed expands a bit but NOT completely like cooking rice or something. it gets too mushy if you do this.
-p.c. 1hr 15 mins
-shake as soon as it is done (need mittens to do this)

i use the polyfil air vent method. its easy, cheap and works well
best of luck

sorry, i should have supplied more specifics. the jars are pints, ventilated with 3/8" holes stuffed with polyfill, are incubated at 83F(give or take), and are probably handled too much.

the bottom of one of the jars has a definite "wet" look to it. i might even have seen a tiny drop of liquid running as i tilted the jar... it's difficult to see past the glare on the glass.

thanks for the replies.

So you admit to over handling lol tut tut.But also looking wet does not sound good as the bacterial contams ive seen on grain look like an oily wet layer. So could be a bit of both.Hope not and good luck.Time will tell.

The jars were each inoculated with a teaspoon of colonized
Mazatapec birdseed.
