Grain jars in fridge going bad but looking good!
    #13183612 - 09/12/10 09:19 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I got some grain jars in the fridge, 4 months old.

They were clean going in, i've been using them with no problems.

Now all i get out of them when i do g2g transfers is bacteria and mold, despite the fact that the fridge jars still look great!

Is it old, weak mycelium, or do the jars pick stuff up from the fridge even after full colonization?

Im asking because im considering getting a mini-fridge from a friend to store jars in...for cleanliness purposes.

Any comments from people that have experience storing grain jars long term is greatly appreciated! This is my first problem with stored jars and it sucks because i lost some good pe clones! AHHH!

When I go to store a grain master jar in the fridge for a long time this is what I do. I wipe the jars down completely with rubbing alcohol. Then I take an unused spawn bag and wipe that out with alcohol also. Put the jar in the bag and fold over the top of the bag a few times, use a paper clip to hold it in place. The spawn bag has a filter patch so it allows a little GA if it needs to. Other then that your "normal" kitchen fridge is absolutely loaded with bacteria so by following that procedure you can cut down on bacterial infection. If you think your jars are infected I would recommend starting over and trying to improve on sterile procedures.
