Taken today from my local cyan wonderpatch.  This was the youngest mushroom among many older completely blue ones.

this season has been sweet. got transplants in the ground and got cardboard colonizing wickedly.

In Humboldt it seems that there are fewer and fewer places that these guys grow naturally. Almost every where I walked this season seemed really over picked and I had to dig through brush and ticks hard to find the few patches that I found... I was stoked to find what I found though...

IMO Humboldt county is overpicked. Well, not the whole county im sure but Arcata, Eurtweeka and all that whole area is. The hoards of hippies and College students make for slim pickings. Arcata can be really out of hand about the Cyans IMO. Its a bummer when the bookstores in town have to start keeping ALL of their mushroom guides in glass cases because they cant stop folks from stealing them so they can get some Free mushrooms too..

I can confirm that...I used to live in Crescent City in the 80's and picked liberty caps back then..Even then people would drive down from the inland areas like Grants Pass to go picking on the coast...It was like a pilgrimage even back then...I remember one field in Orrick (redwood national park, humboldt), private cow field off 101 that had a sign 'all mushrooms picked, stay out'

back in the 80;s, cyans were mostly just a rumour and it was all liberty caps

went back a couple years ago and pickings were even slimmer...many of the public areas (now parks), they stopped running cows years ago and the grass is so thick you need a machete

Ironic that years later the SF Bay Area would turn out better, simply because it's much bigger landscape development than Humboldt could ever be

I do miss the libertys tho....Fond memories

Yeah I ventured out away from the main areas which are always thrashed this time of year. I thought I would just look where no else was looking and it just seemed like everyone was looking every place I went...

If you walk around Arcata picking people yell out to you "Find anything?" from across the street frequently, in other words picking is so common and widely known people frequently recognize what your doing.... Because its Humboldt and a large part of the population is involved in the drug/hippie/counter subculture or Pot industry everyone has theyre eye out for the free mushrooms on the ground during fall... Just my take.

some parts of SF are like that now...just became too famous

only thing you can do is keep ahead of it, transplant to more hidden areas, etc

I remember hearing about the Foggy Bottoms in Arcata back in the 80's, so it was already starting to get famous..And once it gets famous, you can't undo it
