Hey I've heard this movie quoted in regards to psychadelics a few times so I decided to rent it at my local library. Unfortunately every time it cut to theose weird computerized scenes the sound was so distorted I could hear a thing. Subsequently I decided to stop watching after about 30 mins What I would like to know is what is it about this movie that make it a cult classic among trippers?

the answer is to read the fucking books. all 5 of them in the TRILOGY, hahaha that should be agood indicator of the ride your in for. I've read the "trilogy" many many times. each book is awesome every time I read it. once you've read the books the movie makes perfect sense. without the book beackground I wouldn't even know what to think of the movie. personally, I think the movie needs to be redone with badass digital effects. really, dude, READ THE BOOKS, you will not be disappointed...

The movie sux. The books are great. Yes a high-budget remake would be great. Too bad Douglas Adams isn't around anymore, he should've directed it..

From amazon.com
-- Join Douglas Adams's hapless hero Arthur Dent as he travels the galaxy with his intrepid pal Ford Prefect, getting into horrible messes and generally wreaking hilarious havoc. Dent is grabbed from Earth moments before a cosmic construction team obliterates the planet to build a freeway. You'll never read funnier science fiction; Adams is a master of intelligent satire, barbed wit, and comedic dialogue. The Hitchhiker's Guide is rich in comedic detail and thought-provoking situations and stands up to multiple reads. Required reading for science fiction fans, this book (and its follow-ups) is also sure to please fans of Monty Python, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and British sitcoms. -----

adams was "odd", the liner notes of the paperbacks tell how he believed himself (really) to be a mongol warlord in a past life. i quote HHGTG stuff daily without really even thinking about it. the whole jesus dying and digital watches piece is in every book and cracks me up every time . So long and thanks for all the fish would have to be my favorite if I had to pick a favorite. no way could I pick a favorite character.

Sadly, yes, he is gone. Heart-attack nearly 2 yrs ago now.
There were plans for a hollywood movie adaptation. The script was still in-progress when Adams passed away. Probably won't happen now... and thats a good thing overall, imo.
Get a hold of the original BBC radio series (on CD). This is where it started and is a classic radio performance. Books.. yes, those are good too. Skip the TV version unless you absolutely need more.

reading the hitchhiker's guide is a favor you're obligated to do for your self. The books are that good!
