F*%& endospores: The easy peasy WBS tek
    #13170675 - 09/09/10 02:06 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Now there is going to be a lot of flack headed my way over this tek.  Before you start talking shit there is a very similar method to this tek for rye in TMC so :stonedjerk: I learned in mycology that you need to soak to germinate the endospores then simmer to get the right moisture.  Worked great for me for quite some time.  Takes over a day to get your spawn ready.  I like the ezy pzy approach to mycowork so here's a new tek for you to try out.

The WBS I am using for this tek is shit.  List of contents white millet, sunflower seeds, peanuts, fruit blend, canary seed, nyger seed.  This is so far from wat you would want to use for spawn but

1.  Measure out 400 ml of WBS

2.  Measure out 130 ml of water.  Note different brands of WBS require different amounts of water you may need to try different amounts to get the right moisture content.  Try 120-130-140 to get the right amount for your brand of WBS.  You may need to mess around with the amount of water to get the right moisture.

3.  I add a knifetip of gypsum to the jar at this point.(optional)

4.  Put a lid and foil on your jars.  Two different lid types.  Noobieshroomie's and tyvek.  Yes thats usps tyvek it aint illegal for a canadian to use a us federal envelope for purposes other than mailing.

5.  Pressure cook at 15 PSI for 1.5-2 hours.

6.  Clumping and looking wet on the bottom is normal.

7.  Shake the jars well while still hot to distribute the water through out the grain.

2 days after G2G

I just cleaned out a bunch of contamed jars and I'm eager to start them again, so I may have to give this tek a try.  Got 30 lbs of bird seed left and I really hate leaving grains out soaking in water....

I'll bust on people who advise stealing it, but not just for using it.
For all I know, you might have gotten that in the mail as part of a Priority Mail package sent from the US with postage on it.

Still, it's not the best tyvek. And polyfil is better anyway.

yea but with this tek, you dont' get to rinse them off after the soak. there's a lot of dirt that comes off my WBS when i rinse. i feel safer rinsing the WBS after the soak.

Messing with the mail service is a federal offense.  You'll get in more trouble for growing some fungus, I'd think.

^^^ at that point, it's fair game.
Once it's sent to you in a Priority Mail package, even as internal packing, it's legitimately yours to do with as you wish.
(That's my interpretation of the fine print on the envelopes and website. I'm not a lawyer.)

I did grains like this for a while, and contam rates were fine.
But it was harder to handle than prepped grains. Like, breaking up the jars and such.

This is the method we all used from the time sterile procedure was developed until recently when better methods were devised.  I used to put the grains in the jar, fill it up with water and shake, then pour out the water and refill just until the grains were covered, then PC for 90 minutes.

So you're saying that this will work, but soak, boil, pc is just better?  I'm willing to wait a few days more for colonization if it means less prep work, but thats just me.  If its going to cause more contams or something then I may back off of it, but a tub full of soaking bird seed is awfully difficult to explain.

I usually just tell people I'm experimenting with some new homebrew techniques and no one asks questions cause no one knows how to brew beer   It also helps that they typically enjoy my homebrew.

Endospores are something else that people blow out of proportion.
Yes, a few endospores can survive sterilization sometimes. Then they hatch into bacteria.
But that's not really a major concern if your grain is properly prepared.
Correctly hydrated substrate favors mycelium and inhibits bacterial growth.

It's a valid concern, but not a big deal.
