Investigators: Magic mushrooms via the Web
02/19/2003

By CHRIS INGALLS / KING 5 Investigators

They're called "magic mushrooms" and they produce an illegal high. Tuesday, federal agents raided a local company that made tens of thousands of dollars a month selling them on the Internet.

The KING 5 Investigators have been looking into this company for weeks now.

The company is known as Fanaticus and they sell syringes, filled with a solution with countless spores.

With these and a little know-how, just about anyone can grow potent psychedelic mushrooms.

KING 5 was there when drug agents brought in one of two men suspected of putting a high-tech twist on the sale of an old-time drug by operating Fanaticus, the Web site that sells the magic mushrooms via the Internet.

Agents say the men operated out of a home near Lake Quinault in the remote rain-forest country of the Olympic Peninsula ? the perfect climate for growing mushrooms.

Authorities say they first heard about Fanaticus in phone calls coming in from across the country.

The KING 5 Investigators obtained some syringes from Fanaticus. A close look shows the tiny black spores floating in a solution.

Prosecutors say the spores themselves are not illegal. They don't contain the hallucinogenic properties of a full-grown mushroom, but the Web site contains specific instructions on how to inject the spores into a jar and grow a potent magic mushroom.

"It's the equivalent of selling somebody the ingredients to make meth and telling them how to mix it up, and getting paid for it. You'd be guilty of conspiring to distribute methamphetamine," said Doug Whalley, federal prosecutor.

At $10 per syringe, it appears the suspects? worldwide sales were making them rich.

At a court hearing Tuesday, suspected ringleader Robert McPherson admitted earning $30,000 per month and authorities say his only source of income comes from his thriving mail-order mushrooms.

DEA and the postal inspector?s office have been investigating Fanaticus for years. They actually planted some of these spores and grew mushrooms in a DEA lab to make sure the process works. And it did.

Holy crap! Thirty grand a MONTH??? Time for a career change, methinks.

It will be interesting to see what he is charged with. Hopefully he was smart enough not to do any growing himself, but instead acted strictly as a reseller of spores rather than as a producer of spores. If all they could find was spores, they're going to have a tough time obtaining a conviction on possession.

The comments comparing the growing instructions being on the same website as the spore ordering page to the meth production thing is worrisome, though -- a good prosecutor could make a strong case that this constitutes "conspiracy to manufacture" a controlled substance. If I recall correctly, there were even instructions on the page detailing the crude extraction of essential alkaloids.

Damn!

if they are comparing it to meth ingredients does anybody think they will try to make spores illegal? precursors are often illegal so would they consider spores precursors.

$360000 a year and PF has been around a long time. surely he doesnt grow them himself

WOW! First off, the person who wrote this article should have done more homework...

"...the Web site that sells the magic mushrooms via the Internet."

PF doesn't sell mushrooms! He sells spores, BIG DIFFERENCE!

I hope things work out for him.

This is nuts. First off, they know the spores arn't illegal. Second, the information is legal under the Freedom of Information Act, right? Or am I wrong?

Ah ha anyone who believe $30,000 a month is a fool you know they were filing under misc. income on there tax returns and probably laundering lots of money if not for themselves maybe there so-called employs. Otherwise he would have to sell 3,000 syringes a month or 36,000 a year. I really dont think the community is that big and if it was this would have happened 10 years ago. Also at the rate 36,000 a year 10 years operation that 360,000 syringes. I do think somebody was cleaning money. I think the best way to clean it is to call yourself a male escort (privatly employed) and claim about 40-50 thousand a year.

maybe every us based spore company should clean all cultivation notes off there website and just put a direct link to the shroomery ridding them of conspiracy charges.

I have no doubt about the revenue he was/is making, in fact I'd bet its even more than that.

This is a landmark case, and it will have serious repurcussions depending on the outcome.

Yes they will try to make it illegal...it's usualy what they do befor intoducing new legislation....Look at the way the patriot act was passed, they tried it before as the 'omnibus crime bill' about 8 times before the WTC bombing....they tried before and after Waco, the Ok City Federal building and have probably revamped the bill befora the WTC bombing....

My understanding is that others are growing and sending to the vendors...the safe way as long as no one is keeping any records of the transactions and the suppliers...otherwise anyone that ordered will be looked at....

Good Idea, but the info has probably already been viewed by the feds, it would make little or no difference at this point, it could be after an arrest or during a trial but right now it doesnt matter....the bad part is that that would involve the Shroomery in the same situation....providing information may now be illegal under the Patriot Act...times have changed....watch your ass and watch who you talk to.....

ADVICE: Any one that has ordered from ANY vendor in the last 6 months needs to remove anything that can be considered 'cultivation supplies', information, spores or what have you...move them to a safe place and forget about them for a while....distance yourself from everywhere but message boards and hold off on trading for a while or do it only through PMs with people you trust or know....

If the law comes knocking : Donot allow a cop into your house for ANY reason with out a search warrant, always step out side to speak, do not believe ANY of the threats they make and you would be wise to invest in a small voice recorder to document any thing the investigators spoke with you about....LEARN THE LAW

I noticed that too Lana, either the reporters do warp the truth, or the DEA is claiming they were selling mushrooms.

I don't think this is necessary. But always ship your spores via USPS if its in the US, and ship them first class.

I also want to point out the fact that these spores HAVE to come from somewhere. If you are in posession of spores, and you didn't obtain them from someone else, then you definitely did something illegal, as at some time you were in possession of magic mushrooms. I'm sure Fanaticus could've been growing all their own mushrooms, but I know they wouldn't have sold them to people.

While the other advice was good.... never do this. Courts have ruled the police do NOT have to allow you to re-enter your home. The can detain you outside until the warrant arrives.
