I am surprised that they have not done this sooner.

I saw an ad for a new high tech cop car that reads the license plates of all the cars that pass in the opposite direction and checks them all for warrants.

Around here the police cars check license plates to see if the cars are registered.

Been used in the UK for a looong time now, absolute bastards.

If you go to illegal raves in a vehicle, or are linked to drugs your car gets flagged up, its a nightmare.

I seriously am about to register my car to some shell corporation just to stymie this bullshit.

A police department in my neck of the woods supposedly just got a grant for a ludicrously expensive implementation of this.

Fuck em, bad enough you have to register your car, I don't need em tracking my movements when that has nothing to do with the reasoning for registration.  Bout to transfer my cars to Fuck The Police Inc.

If you happened to go through a mud puddle a little mud might splash up on your plate making it hard to read. Just by chance of course, don't go doing it deliberately.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Where I grew up, that would get you a ticket.  There was a law against obscured license plates.  You might get out of it in court, but that doesn't stop them from pulling you over and issuing a ticket.

Very true, in fact I was working at an auto parts store once and noticed some of the license plate frames where so big they would obscure the numbers or registration stickers. Looking closer you can read on the package "for off-road use only". Just another reason to get pulled over.
Where I live now last I heard there was 2 cops that had those readers installed. They usually cruise through parking lots scanning for registration, insurance or stolen cars.
Luckily they are fairly expensive so smaller cities shouldn't have many off them. Thankfully I got my license back a few years ago, didn't have one for about 6 years.
