I tried learning on an acoustic a while back but couldn't motivate myself to really get in to it (grant it this was before I even smoked weed). Once I got an electric though its like I just fell in to it... I get upset if I don't have time to play every day now.
Got my Epi LPC silverburst coming in the mail tomorrow from ebay now. That's where I cast my vote as well (ebay/craigslist).
Mmmmm secz.....

They do, I live 20 mins north of you in St marys. Small town pawn shops suck. They know I don't want to drive to Jax or brunswick so they charge top dollar for their shit.
$9 bucks for some strings.

Why acoustic/electric?
Are you planning on playing in a concert? With others that are amped?
I'm all for you starting up-- but I wonder why you're looking to pay extra money for electronics when you'll most likely never use them.
The money spent on a pickup would be far better spent on an acoustic made from better wood, with finer materials, that will have a sometimes dramatic effect on the sound quality and playability of a guitar. A pickup can only be used with an amp. If you want to record your playing, just buy a mic and do it that way. Or, spend the $ now on a better made guitar and have a pickup installed someday if you actually need it.
What I'm saying is, as a beginner, if you're like the vast majority of newer players, you are not going to have any need to buy an acoustic amp and play it electric. Acoustics are plenty loud as-is.
My advise? Like the guys have said-- go play a few brands, in price points all up and down the range. I started with a cheap-ass Ibanez that was maybe $150.
I hated it so much I never, ever played it. It sounded BAD. The action was ridiculously bad, and downright painful to play for more than 20 minutes. I was too embarassed back when to play a lot of them, and just took the one that looked decent. Mistake.
I ended up later buying a Mexican Fender fat strat off ebay that rocked my world. EASY to play man-- electrics have softer strings, and (strats anyway) have a much narrower neck that can be easier to navigate (for me, with my hands: this is another reason you should try a lot of types before buying, BTW) I found that I enjoyed playing much more on my Strat, and that was well worth the extra few hundred bux I spent on the axe and the shitty $99 solid state cube amp. Elite sound-- hell no, but with an electric you have a whole range of sound to play with. Coupled with the ease of playing I have always held it to be a better first choice for beginners. That's entirely subjective, however. The case for acoustic-first is always valid--though I heartily disagree that punishing brand-new players with the stiffer strings and higher action of an acoustic is somehow more enticing to learners... The sound of a beautiful acoustic, however, can not be more wonderful.
Fast forward several years and my Ibanez sat collecting dust in a closet-- gave it to a friend (with apologies). Now I have a Taylor. Oh, BABY!! Light-years of difference in quality between the two-- It's almost as smooth as an electric--fucking butter man....soooo sweeet. I wish you could get this kind of guitar to start with--you'd never put it down
I wish you the best of luck-- please listen to the smart guys above and don't be afraid to go into a music store and PLAY GUITARS! Seriously-- no pride in learning a G or an A minor chord with your bro and using that limited tonal experience to help you in your selection-- even that little bit can help quite a bit in telling the base characteristics between one guitar and another. That are ALL different--but especially so for acoustics. Every piece of wood, the binding, cut, and tension affects an acoustic, where electrics are more noticeably affected by the pickups (which can be upgraded). (I'm speaking generally here-- of course there are other things that impact electric sound, but the pickups are numero uno)
OK-- good luck bud!

thanks costal, you may have changed my mind about things. Maybe a better acoustic only guitar would be the better investment for the long run, my dad has a pickup that you put in the hole so i could just use that for now.
im a sucker for the gadgets though

Like everyone has said it's very subjective but based off of what you've said I'd strongly suggest looking in to an electric to start. Especially with that gadget comment.
Sure the pure sound of a good acoustic is unbeatable, but man electrics are so versitile and powerful. I love being able to bend the fuck out of strings, HO/PO with ease, and use a plethora of pedals / effects to change the sound mid-song.
My 2 cents: go wherever you can to try out some electrics and acoustics. Evaluate how much you want to spend and then see what works best for you. If the price range is really low you will probably go with an acoustic over a cheap starter electric. Also keep in mind that you don't NECESSARILY have to have an amp with an electric guitar- First I bought my electric and learned on it w/o an amp for 3 months or so, then had the money for a pretty good amp so I got that, then would just pick up some pedals and such here and there. Not ideal but for the long run I think its worth it to not sacrifice quality of 1 component for fear of not having a different component due to money.
Just know that if you get in to it, it can be a money pit. I now have 4 guitars, 2 amps, 6 pedals, and a couple of other random accessories and I've only been playing for under 2 years. That being said though, its by far my favorite money pit
